G'day

We went on the 8 hour trip via White Pass to Carcross and Lake Bennett on 29th May when in Alaska with Chilkoot, We enjoyed the rail part of trip more than the Rocky Mountaineer

Also on our trip we done the return bus trip with a guide called James , got all the Alaska stories with an Irish accent , a top guide , he even turned the bus around at one point to try and get a better look at a bear beside the road

We got a better price and a less crowded train carriage and bus than those who booked on the ship

Highly recommended by us

We were fortunate to get on the Chilkoot Tour the day we were in Skagway, thank goodness they had a cancellation! We did the 4 hour tour, train to Fraser, BC, bus back to Skagway. There are three options for the train - stay on the train up to the White Pass summit and back to Skagway, train/bus to Fraser, or train/bus combo to Carcross in the Yukon. If I had had a choice, I would have taken the longer trip to Carcross - I think that you see a lot more. Still, the trip to Fraser was enjoyable with great views!
Mike picked us up at our cruise ship at noon (he stopped at all four ships), and took us for a quick tour of Skagway before we got on the train. It was very interesting to see the town from the perspective of a local (very expensive to live there!). He then shepherded us onto the train - we were in the last car along with one other tour group. He gave a quick rundown of the days itinerary, and explained the importance of getting off the train and onto the bus at Fraser as quickly as possible! He wants to beat the big buses out of the station, if possible. The customs agents came onto the train to check everyone's passport, then we were free to depart.
The narration on the train was good, and we were given a White Pass brochure, including all of the points of interest. You can go out onto the small platform between the carriages, but space is at a premium - everyone is trying to get the best photos. The bottles of water were appreciated, as was the bathroom (there is no bathroom on the bus). Mike made several stops on the way down for photos, and was great at offering to take couple photos if we wanted. He has the gift of the gab, and kept us entertained the whole way back with his stories. We were able to breeze through customs on the way back down the pass (Canadian customs on the way up, US customs on the way down) as he knows most of the agents.
I really felt this was a very personal tour, with the passengers having input on where to stop and for how long. Everyone stops at the Welcome to Alaska sign, and I was very impressed with how all of the tour operators handled the bottle-neck! This was definitely better than the cruise ship tours with the giant tour buses!

I spent a lot of time researching options to take the White Pass & Yukon Railroad - it was one of the things I most wanted to do on our cruise. I contacted almost every tour company and went with Chilkoot for the good value and great reviews. We did the noon train to Frasier and came back via bus. Mike, our driver, was awesome. He was clearly committed to giving us the best experience possible. The train was late getting in so instead of having us sit at the station he drove us around Skagway. Being a local, he had some great stories and knew a lot about daily life in town. The views going up to Frasier were spectacular but I'm glad we didn't take the train back to town. It was cool to see the 9-person town of Frasier and it was really nice to see the other side of the valley. Mike was great about getting us all on the bus as quickly as possible so that we wouldn't have to battle the whole train for the picture spots on the way back to town. We stopped at a waterfall, the Alaska sign, and an overlook above Skagway. I would 100% recommend using Chilkoot. I loved hearing a local's perspective and being on a smaller bus allowed us to see a lot more and move a lot faster. On the train, definitely sit on left side going to Frasier and be sure to spend some time outside. You can't choose your train carriage but we got lucky and ended up in the last one so we got to stand at the back and take pictures. The train does provide bottled water and a guide book.

As others have commented, this was an excellent tour group. We had the entire last train car all to ourselves and there were about 15 of us. this gave us all the opportunity to stand outside on the rear platform and take pictures. the waterfalls were right next to us as headed north and the scenery spectacular. we were fortunate to have a clear day so could see far into the distance. Their tour goes all the way into Canada which the cruise ship tour didn't. they missed out on an exciting part. it does take some time for customs to check all the passports but it was a pleasant wait and our van driver was right outside our car waving to us.
the trip into the Yukon and back gave us a different view of the landscape so I am glad we didn't take the train up and down but elected to take the van down instead. we did stop for lunch and the chicken, cole slaw and potato was very good. The rest of the park was disappointing somewhat but we didn't expect too much. so glad we decided to do the dog sled experience in Juneau instead on the snow. Having experienced that, this dog sled on barren ground would have been so disappointing. Our driver was excellent and willing to answer all our questions on Alaska. He drove us through a small Alaskan village which I was glad to see their homes, etc.
Definitely would go with them again.

We took the minibus all the way to Carcross and back again with Bruce, who was an excellent driver and guide, always calm and cheerful. He told us to yell if we saw any wildlife, and he would go back and get a proper look at it. We twice saw a bear and he did go back so we could stay and watch it. The whole trip was excellent - apart from the disgusting food at lunchtime (unfortunately included in the tour price). If we had known how bad it was we would have taken sandwiches, and I recommend others to do just that.
