“So happy we booked with Chilkoot!”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

I spent a lot of time researching options to take the White Pass & Yukon Railroad - it was one of the things I most wanted to do on our cruise. I contacted almost every tour company and went with Chilkoot for the good value and great reviews. We did the noon train to Frasier and came back via bus. Mike, our driver, was awesome. He was clearly committed to giving us the best experience possible. The train was late getting in so instead of having us sit at the station he drove us around Skagway. Being a local, he had some great stories and knew a lot about daily life in town. The views going up to Frasier were spectacular but I'm glad we didn't take the train back to town. It was cool to see the 9-person town of Frasier and it was really nice to see the other side of the valley. Mike was great about getting us all on the bus as quickly as possible so that we wouldn't have to battle the whole train for the picture spots on the way back to town. We stopped at a waterfall, the Alaska sign, and an overlook above Skagway. I would 100% recommend using Chilkoot. I loved hearing a local's perspective and being on a smaller bus allowed us to see a lot more and move a lot faster. On the train, definitely sit on left side going to Frasier and be sure to spend some time outside. You can't choose your train carriage but we got lucky and ended up in the last one so we got to stand at the back and take pictures. The train does provide bottled water and a guide book.

“Trip to Yukon by train and van”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

As others have commented, this was an excellent tour group. We had the entire last train car all to ourselves and there were about 15 of us. this gave us all the opportunity to stand outside on the rear platform and take pictures. the waterfalls were right next to us as headed north and the scenery spectacular. we were fortunate to have a clear day so could see far into the distance. Their tour goes all the way into Canada which the cruise ship tour didn't. they missed out on an exciting part. it does take some time for customs to check all the passports but it was a pleasant wait and our van driver was right outside our car waving to us.
the trip into the Yukon and back gave us a different view of the landscape so I am glad we didn't take the train up and down but elected to take the van down instead. we did stop for lunch and the chicken, cole slaw and potato was very good. The rest of the park was disappointing somewhat but we didn't expect too much. so glad we decided to do the dog sled experience in Juneau instead on the snow. Having experienced that, this dog sled on barren ground would have been so disappointing. Our driver was excellent and willing to answer all our questions on Alaska. He drove us through a small Alaskan village which I was glad to see their homes, etc.
Definitely would go with them again.

“Shame about the chicken!”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

We took the minibus all the way to Carcross and back again with Bruce, who was an excellent driver and guide, always calm and cheerful. He told us to yell if we saw any wildlife, and he would go back and get a proper look at it. We twice saw a bear and he did go back so we could stay and watch it. The whole trip was excellent - apart from the disgusting food at lunchtime (unfortunately included in the tour price). If we had known how bad it was we would have taken sandwiches, and I recommend others to do just that.

“Skagway, Alaska Chilkoot Charters and Tours' White Pass Train”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

We chose the private Chilkoot Charters and Tours option for the train ride up the pass, because it cost $100 less than our ship onshore excursion for the same train. And the owners of the company are second generation, with a generous refund policy as well as a guarantee they would get us back to our ship on time. It was an excellent choice.
We chose the train up and the bus back because the bus ride offered a different perspective. That was also a good choice.
The overall experience was greatly enhanced by our tour guide/bus driver, MIKE. If you sign up for this tour, be sure to ask for him. He is far and away, the most competent, funny and skilled tour bus driver we have had on our many travels, and that says a lot. He advised us on the best places to sit on the train; made stops on the bus ride down for photos; gave us an impromptu tour of Skagway while waiting for the train to arrive, while relaying stories and information about life in Skagway. He made it real, personal and fun. And the bus trip down, safe. I do not like heights and he was careful to reassure us of his experience driving down the steep mountain side, as well as to explain his method of downshifting to save on the brakes. Beside being funny, competent, and entertaining, he showed concern and respect for others. While at a photo stop, he helped an new inexperienced bus driver maneuver a tight turn. He was positive and never told a snarky joke about others. I was touched by his remark that Skagway is a small town - 800 folks in off season - and people all treat each other well. Mike was a living example of that. With MIKE, of Chilkoot Charters and Tours, you will get the best of the best. (and, no, I am not related to him and never met him before.) :) But glad I did now.

“Book independently its a much better option”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

Most of the cruise ships offer the White Pass rail tour however this one is so MUCH better. The cruise ship offered the rail journey both ways however it doesn't go all the way up into Canada and this is the most stunning part of the journey. NOTE you need your passport for this as you enter Canada.

We chose the early option of 7.30am train ride, after meeting Mike our guide on the pier we headed to the train station with our other guests (4 in total) Chilkoot have an arrangement with the railway and we had the 2nd last carriage with the 4 of us with Mike and 8 others who were doing the longer day trip. Plenty of room to go outside and take amazing pictures as the train weaves up the mountain. Water is also provided which is a nice touch.
The train takes about 1 1/2 hours to reach the top and whilst there are patches of white out along the way the SUN shone for us once we reached the top, it was breathtaking.
Mike met us off the train and drove us back down stopping 6 times for photos, as there were only 4 of us in this private bus it was great. He chatted and told us jokes all the way down and took photos for us as well. A great day, he also recommended a great spot for lunch in Skagway and Alaskan adventure tour with the dog sleds up the mountain.
This was a tour that I had been recommended by friends who had used Chilkoot previously and I have no hesitation in recommending them either, professional, reliable and good old fashioned service,
The scenery in Skagway is stunning and with Chilkoot you get to see way more than the cruise ships offer in an intimate group it was perfect!
Thanks Mike we will be sending our friends you way :)
