Off season ?? Restaurant was full - good sign. Great atmosphere. Service was crisp without being overbearing. Informative waitress. In particular, the marinated scallops were fabulous and the main course fish dishes were cooked to perfection. Excellent evening.

We had the best dinner at Chez Mattin during our stay in Ciboure and if we hadn't visited on our last evening we would have come back. The owner very patiently explained the menu to us despite our limited French and in general the service was great. The food was excellent and among the best we have had during our 2 week vacation.

Thank Crisser

(pronounced Mattine) — this restaurant is in a class of its own — we went there three times on our first visit to the Basque coast, because we liked it so much. Five years later, nothing has changed, and we've since learned from locals we've come to know that it's an institution, famous for miles around. This time we shared an entree of chipirons, a local name for calamari or squid, and it was terrific. For a main course we shared a large serve of line-caught merlu or merluzza, a marvellous local fish – it was cleaved in half and grilled with secret herbs and spices and lots of garlic. Superb. I cannot speak highly enough of this restaurant, and I'm only one of thousands who thinks so.
I see that another reviewer found it overrated. Certainly not my view.

Tucked away in a narrow street in Ciboure, across the river from St Jean de Luz, this restaurant was a very pleasant experience. Warm welcome, cheerful room, excellent food, vivacious atmosphere, more locals than tourists (like us!). A good panorama of Basque cuisine, well executed. Reservations essential.

During a weeks stay we ate out every day in St Jean de Luz, Biarritz, San Sebastian and local towns. This was the best meal by far for all 5 of our party, the fish was excellent one of our party had Duck which was also very good. The service was freindly, warm and very efficient .
