Pielinen is over 90 km long and 30 km wide and over 60 meter deep at its best. It has almost 1500 islands. At the top of Koli you get a nice view over the lake. Rent a kajak, canoe or I thing that an ordinary Finnish roving boat is the best, if you are 2-4 and want to make a nice daytrip. Wintertime they have iceroad over the lake.

Being extremely deep to be a Finnish lake, Pielinen is also long, like 60 km and the whole water system is being more than 200 km long. You can sail to Pielinen from south coast of Finland actually.
This lake hides many secrets, being also an important sacred lake lake of the Finland of old times. There is a rare endemic species of seal, and a rare type of- but tasty- pike- perch, “Harri or Harris”, the correct name being Harjus. There is a local delicacy, too, the incaptivated herring, Muikku which is Leek in English and also found in Canada with whom Finland share the geology with.
Enjoy the lake views from the top of Koli, or make a boat trip during the summer. Remember many winter scenes in international movies like James Bond and Anna Karenina, Doctor Zhivago and action films are shot by the ice of lake Pielinen.

Really loved the Paalasmaa and nearby islands..there is actually a ferry which takes you to the islands for free! Scenery is amazing..especially in summer when the sun doesn't set completely. Nearby Koli national park has also stunning views.

Beautiful views from the hill tops around the lake. We were a week too early in the season to benefit from ferry/boat rides on the lake but we enjoyed driving along it and admiring it from Ukko-Koli hill.
