Owner description: Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History As a prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations member, the Museum provides visitors with a unique perspective on the strategic and economic use of railroads during and after the Civil War. The Museum, conveniently located near downtown Kennesaw, Georgia is home to the General locomotive, made famous during the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862, an impressive Civil War collection, and the Glover Machine Works, a restored early 20th-century belt-driven locomotive assembly line. The Jolley Education Center offers numerous hands-on and interactive exhibits that are fun for the entire family, and the Cobb Energy Gallery features traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), as well as other sources! The Southern Museum’s educational programs reinforce classroom learning by connecting historical information with actual artifacts.

The museum may be small but it is filled with quality displays of history. We really enjoyed the train section and the General Lee. If you like Civil War history or trains, you will find both here.

If you have any interest in the Civil War, you will LOVE this little museum and theater. The actual locomotive of fame is dispalyed outside, and the story behind its recapture is fascinating.

Here is the locomotive the Yankees stole in the Great Train Robbery, smack dab in the middle of a cute little town.

Price was cheap, Great place to learn about the local area, great place to learn about old trains, how "the General" was stolen by the north during the civil war. Nothing bad to say at all, I guess if I had to say something I disliked, I wanted to get on "The General" but they will not let you.

We went here with young children, ages 5-10. The museum is interesting with many interactive displays for children. We enjoyed the movie, and our grandchildren loved the "playroom." They experimented with morse code and dressed in period garb. We loved our few hours at the museum.
