Loved escaping into a warm, hickory-smoke-smelling railcar for lunch on a cold, drizzly day in Jan! I live in Atlanta and never dreamed I'd find this kind of tender pork BBQ with 6 different sweet and savory sauce options in AK! The bread for my BBQ sandwich was tender and delicious and the service was pleasant and helpful. You won't be sorry if you spend a few hours and dollars here.

Breakfast is great. Big (eggs and pancakes) or just a cup of coffee, a "dining car" experience- yes even to the point of closeness with your party in space! Seems like the place is always busy, even late in the afternoon when we went by later in the day.

By the looks of it, we thought it would be average food, with average service, but were pleasantly surprised. Very small inside, six tables - the kitchen takes up half the train car. The Smoked Green Chili Burrito ($13.00) was excellent - wanted to go back the next day for another. Worth a stop, for sure.

I was tempted to light this place on fire after our craptacular "meal" but didn't want to see Seward jail. DO NOT GO HERE!!!

Background: So we are not picky eaters, or jerks, or impatient. We have been all over and eaten in shacks, shady noodle joints, and places with long lines out the door. So what I don't understand is, why in the hell this place is popular, and why all the good reviews?

This place TOTALLY SUCKS. On so many levels. Probably the worst service we've even encountered, and then the saddest part was the food was beyond terrible.

1) the line to get in, with only 1 couple ahead of us, ended up being 45 minutes. shame on us for waiting.

2) when we finally got in, the waitress was terrible. This was memorial day monday. So maybe it was their B team? Cause she was way overworked and had too many tables.

3) the "cook" lady was slow as hell. She was THE WORST. if she is the owner, she needs to go on kitchen nightmares. actually heard her complain about the number of tickets on her plate. well lady, maybe you should back away from the grill and let the 3 young dudes who were just sitting around washing a dish or too do the work. Cause you are slower than molasses and are ruining the joint.

4) she actually was cooking the orders, ONE BY ONE. no multi tasking. we saw a dude order a cold salad and soup and it took 25 minutes for him to get premade food. WTF. So after about an hour wait for food, THIS IS FOR LUNCH!!!! we finally get our food. Holy F'in Cow it was bad. The Pork BBQ was supposedly what they were proud of, but man were those BBQ sauces sad. The chicken burrito was absolutely NOT EDIBLE. Such a shame. You expect after a wait that becomes almost comical, that at least the food is great and you can laugh about how crappy the service was, but worth it because the food was so good. NOT HERE. I don't understand these positive reviews. Is it because people in Seward are loyal to local businesses? Is it because there's nothing else out there? Do yourself a favor.

SKIP THIS PLACE This place IS AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO to Ray's instead. We went there for dinner. Delicious!

Some of the best casual food that we have ever enjoyed was in the Smoke Shack in Seward, Alaska. Located at the end of town on the dock, the restaurant is in an old train car. You enter the restaurant from the deck (back side) not the front. A very small restaurant there are only 6 wooden booths in side but there are 3 picnic tables on the deck to eat outside. We arrived early so no waiting for lunch. The aroma from the grill (and the rain outside) enticed us to sit inside. Rock Fish Tacos were on the special menu and they were fantastic with fresh veggies and fresh fish! We also tried the gumbo which was thick, hearty and great tasting. They also serve Henry Weinhard's root beer - love it!
