“Great View - Building Codes?”
Reviewed August 9, 2008

The view from our room was wonderful. Our room was nicely appointed, and clean. The room is rather small making it a little difficult to navigate if you have more than a bag or two. Shaving is a challenge do the lack of lighting. The area nearby is rather 'sketchy'. We arrived within the stated check in hours to find a note on the office door. It instructed us on how to find our room. The 2 story stairway up to the room was quite something. It was still under construction and would be quite hazardous for children and elderly people. Based on this and several other aspects of the newly constructed building I figure there must not be any building inspections in Seward. Unlike other small B&B type places we have stayed the only interaction we had with the owners was by phone. The little contact we did have was positive. Overall we found the people of Alaska to be warm and friendly folks.

We appreciate this feedback from guests who stayed in our Heron Roost building the summer it first opened. These guests stayed in our Heron View room, which is our coziest room, and our best priced unit. It is a small room, but if guests are traveling with a lot of luggage, much of it can be stored under the bed when not in use, to help free up space. We're not sure why there was a lack of light for shaving. All of our buildings are built to the highest standards. This guest is correct that there are no required building inspections and that at the time of his stay the handrails were not completed yet, but there were hand rails in place, sufficient to get by. Since we're more of a couples retreat, no small children were ever at risk, and the elderly guests all stayed in ground level units. The handrails were completed shortly after this guest's stay, and no one was ever at any risk of injury - it just didn't look appealing, but what was there was functional. As we have mentioned in other responses, it's impossible to always be available in person, since it's just the two of us, but we're always accessible via phone. Over the years as we have grown this business, we've developed a schedule of being on the property during daytime hours - but our home is only 1200 feet from the property - so we can be there in mere moments when needed. Thanks again for the feedback!

We stayed 3 nights in the Gatehouse Cabin. What a lovely, comfortable place to stay! It was a real treat to be so close to the water. We woke up in the morning to the sunrise over the mountains. Although there is a TV, we didn't turn it on. The scenery and the otters were our entertainment every evening.

There is a small kitchen. You won't be preparing any gourmet meals there, but it is certainly adequate for a simple meal or breakfast. There is also a grill outside on the deck.

One small complaint is the shower. It is one of those hand held shower heads (maybe because the whole cabin is wheel chair accessible?) and we had a difficult time getting it to point where we wanted it to go. Like I said, it was only a small problem. We would go back to Angels Rest in a minute. The owners were gracious and helpful. Oh, and don't let previous comments about the road scare you off. It is an unpaved road, but it is fine!

Stayed at Angels Rest, July 2008. Beautiful, peaceful location with some units right on the water. Owners were constantly in contact and provided a lot of little things to make the place better. ie coolers, fire pit outside with wood there, gas grill, chairs for outside, etc. Units had small fridge, hot plate, coffee pot, microwave. Very comfortable, clean, and prices at or below hotels in town. A much better choice for couples looking for something more than a hotel room.

We were touring Alaska with my husbands bother, his son (age 7), and his Dad (age 87) and Mom. We had made reservations in advance at Angels Rest. The Cabins were in good shape and stocked with almost everything for a 2 nite stay. The stairs leading up to our room seemed unsafe for little children there was no guard to keep them from falling through to the ground. The suroundings were breathtaking and the view from our room looked out over Resurrection Bay and glaciers beyond. It was a little isolated but there was a store near by (Millers Landing) that gave you that small town feel and a good place to book tours.
The only problems we had were not with the rooms but with the management. They were highly stressed and seemed very angry with us. On check in we called the management she seemed to be angry from the beginning. We had problems finding our rooms (not located near the office). We finally found the area they were in and assumed we had found the right rooms. We started putting our luggage in. THe management showed up and started yelling at us because we had moved our lugage into the worng rooms. Telling us she hoped that she did not have to clean the room again because of us!!
We were only given 1 key to the unit and accidently locked in the room on the 4th of July. They did come and open the door but we had a hard time getting a hold of them.
On check out I talked to her husband about being a little late (20 minutes) because of trying to get everything out of our rooms he said o.k.. While we were moving everything she appeared again and starting yelling that we were to be out by 10:00. She was waiting to clean the room and had employee's with nothing to do. She was very angry and argued with us about the rules and that we should read them. This interaction made us upset and we will not stay in this hotel ever again.

Perhaps travelers do not realize the work that goes into small boutique operations such as ours, but quite often we need every single minute between check out and check in to get things done and guests being inconsiderate of stated policies like check-in and out times, can cause real problems. We're sorry this group of guests got off on the wrong foot with us; had they simply read the paperwork and arrived at the proper time, most of their problems would have been avoided.

Not only did they arrive early ...... they chose to ignore every single piece of information that was provided to them regarding check-in times and policies, the units they were assigned, directions to their units, and check-out times. They had reserved 2 rooms in our new 4-plex cabin. The paperwork we sent them gave explicit directions, but they ignored those also. Instead, they pulled into the waterfront cabins, ignored the fact that their names were not on either cabin's welcome board, walked into both, tracking up the floors and using the bathrooms, so both cabins had to be refreshed. The day they were to check out, they lingered and lingered; it was well past 10:30 (ckout is 10) when we asked what was going on and they said they thought check out was 11am, even though all welcome boards outside rooms have the check out time stated in red. We never yelled at anyone however, not on day of arrival and not on day of departure. We were upset, but we did not yell.

The Herons Roost building that they stayed in is brand new and while the handrails are in place, some of the other outside trim is still under construction. For our guests traveling with small children, we normally discuss this and caution them at check-in time. Again, these folks arrived early, so did not have a normal check-in proceedure. We hope to have the rest of the trim on the handrails done shortly. The weather did not cooperate for construction this winter and spring which put us behind on some things; and now, we can only work on things like that when no guests around .... which is extremely rare, so some things will not get finished now until fall. We have been quite fortunate and most guests have been more than gracious and understanding about the few things that remain "undone."

What a wonderful place! the cabin was beautiful, the view spectacular! sitting out on the porch looking at Resurrection Bay and the mountains or sitting inside on very comfortable rocking chairs/lying in bed overlooking the same view! The owners could not have been more responsive, but left us to our privacy as well. The drive there leaves a little to be desired, a terrible road and the surroundings initially make you think that perhaps you've chosen the wrong location. However, once you get to the cabin you forget all that in a heartbeat! The name fits the place perfectly -- I could not recommend this more highly and I would go back in a minute!

This is a wonderful place to stay just outside Seward. It's a ten minute drive along the water, next to Miller's Landing and an RV Park. Don't worry, you won't hear any noise from the RV folks but
you are a few hundred feet from where they stay.

The view is phenomenal since the cabin is right on the water.
Snow capped mountains above the beautiful ocean.

My wife and I saw lots of ocean wildlife right outside our picture windows which were directly in front of our bed! A pair of great binoculars are provided if you don't have your own and there are lots of travel and nature guides.

The place is very clean and pretty. No doubt, attention has been paid to details. We even had flannel sheets on the bed! The heater works great so don't worry if you are there when it's cold.

Two downsides but they are minor. The TV is only hooked up to a DVD player so no cable or DISH. Some would say this is a plus but it would have been nice to get the nightly news. Perhaps a big antenna would bring in a channel or two. It worked at our cabin in Homer. The other downside was construction at the
owner's property but it wasn't too early or too late so it didn't bother us but you might want to ask about it before you book.

Good luck,
Hollywood Howie

P.S. In town we did the Renown 6 hour boat ride. We saw lots of Orcas, Humpbacks, Puffins (birds) seals etc. Nice trip but we only saw one glacier (Hubbard) so if glaciers are your thing go on a trip to Prince William Sound from Whittier. The Seward Aquarium was okay but too expensive. Coupons for both in the TourSaver book. Google them to check out there website to see if the book is for you. We saved hundreds of dollars.

I feel as though anything i say about our stay at the WIng Cabin at Angels Rest on Resurrection Bay would fail to do it justice. From the moment we arrived we were treated to the sound of the waves lapping the shore, the calm serenity of the location and the cabin itself which was perfect! The cabin has everything you could want, from a small kitchen (including a microwave and small fridge too!) A great deck and BBQ, and even a fire pit for a campfire should you be moved to watch a fire as you hear the water, as i was! We found the entire experience to be both relaxing and romantic! The owners and hosts of our stay were kind enough accomodate us as we ended up being late for check in, and warm and friendly when we finally were able to see each other! I had requested extra blankets when we booked the cabin back in February and when we arrived there they were beside the bed!! We were a stones throw from Millers Landing should you want to go out fishing or kayak (we took a guided kayak to Bridal Falls which was amazing!) And were close to downtown Seward should you need anything from dinner at a local restaurant to a cruise to the glaciers! (we went with Renown Tours, which was a wonderful day on the water! we saw everything from orcas to sea lions, breaching humpbacks to jumping silver salmon!) Overall, i would give this cabin and company a perfect rating! I coudn't dream of anything to change, except the weather perhaps, but hey, a little rain on a cabin roof sounds great in the morning from a cozy bed!
