“Wonderful Adventure - Unique in so many ways”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2014

When we arrived in Seward, we were told that our hotel reservation through Booking.com was not valid. (Long story and won't go into here). Lucky for us the management was able to get us two nights in the Tree House room at Le Barn Appetit. This place is an adventure. The Tree House is built around a tree so the house does sway at times. We were told this at check in and found it fun rather than bothersome. It is not a huge room but perfect for my husband, myself and my son. My son slept in an upstairs loft. Perfect for older kids but probably not toddlers or sleepwalkers! I saw the review below complaining about it being cold and the bathroom door being odd. We used the heater and were very comfortable. The bathroom door is a bit odd but we have seen these types of doors in other homes. Janet and Yvon, the owners, make the experience. They are very kind and funny. The crepes and waffles are amazing. We ate every bite despite being full b/c they were so good. There is a fire ring outside with plenty of wood. We sat and chatted with other guests long into the evening. You will need a car as this place is outside of Seward. Very eclectic. Not you sterile Motel experience. No fancy fluffy towels or turn down service but you can get that anywhere. Janet and Yvon you will not get everywhere.

While the crepes were quite good, it was the visit with Janet and Yvon that made this simply the most memorable Alaskan experience. Loved the stories and hanging out with them both. Don't expect anything fast. This is eating and visiting as it is meant to be.

We stayed at the Jack London cabin. It was a true alaskan experience. The decor was very very interesting. The dead animals on the walls really freaked my kids out but there are dead things on walls at every alaskan store, restaurant, hotel. I am glad we stayed. So much more character then staying at the holiday inn. This place isnt for everyone, but you have the rest of your life to stay in generic hotel rooms and how many times will you go to alaska? My kids are 13, 11,8. I would not stay at jack london cabin with toddlers as the stair case loft area is not child proofed. My kids will never forget that little cabin in seward alaska!

We stayed at the Le Barn Appetit on July 30th and 31st. A gorgeous B&B with a huge room that accommodated 4 people. It was a joy to see all the farm animals. The views were beautiful and they also had a neat sun room. This was my first stay at a B&B and I enjoyed the experience. The crepes at breakfast was out of the world and I loved the conversations that went with the crepes. The decor in the dining room was personal intimate with a lot of memorabilia. I couldn't wait to rush downstairs every morning at 7:00 am to enjoy a long breakfast. My only wish is for some more window treatments in the window to block the midnight Alaska sun. Thank you Yvon and Jane for the good time.

Meeting Janet and Yvon was one of the highlights of our vacation. We went there for breakfast. As soon as you enter, you know you are somewhere special. There are three large tables with Yvon's crepe stand on the side. Just pick a seat and you are in for the experience of a lifetime! There are so many artifacts on the walls and the tables, and each has its own unique story. Just ask Janet or Yvon and they will tell you all about it. From diving with Jacques Cousteau to teaching kids about world cultures in the Seward area, Yvon and Janet have done it all. You are greeted with a warm welcome and right away, you can just help yourself for coffee while Janet brings you fresh glacier water.

Choosing which crepe to order is not an easy task, they are so many interesting ones to choose from! We basically let Yvon and Janet choose for us, one savory and one sweet one. We had the Crepe du Jour (Spinach, reindeer sausage, egg, cheese) and the Crepe aux Fraises Chocolat with additional blueberry compote. Now you have to remember that these crepes are huge and are meant to be shared family style. Both were delicious! So much that our kids asked for another one. As other guests came in, we enjoyed lively discussions with Yvon making crepes in the background. Meeting Yvon and Janet was like meeting old friends. I wish we lived in Alaska and not too far from Seward to be able to enjoy more crepes and amazing stories... Stop by The Barn Appetit on your next trip to Seward for a delicious meal and to discover what the Alaskan spirit is all about. Yvon and Janet's life stories will inspire you to live life to the fullest and embark on brand new adventures of your own. Definitely a hidden gem in the middle of Alaska!

I would like to echo those who also enjoyed their food and stay at Le Barn Appetit. We spent three nights in July at Yvon and Janet's property and can truly say we will have long-lasting memories of our great time there.
The property is located just outside town and it is very quiet. The breakfast crepes are just great. It is a full meal to give you energy through the day. My 9-year-old son Kevin enjoyed Yvon and Janet so much that one morning he asked to assist them in the kitchen for a while. He washed dishes, served coffee, brought orders to tables, and helped clean up. He did not want to leave the property as he felt Yvon and Janet were his best friends. I can only highly recommend thi B&B and the restaurant as I know everyone will have an unforgettable Alaska experience.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Le Barn Appetit, the first creperie in all of Alaska, was created in 1987 by Yvon and Janet van Driessche, your hosts, and their children. We built the original four-story barn (Belgian-style) which is the tallest building in Seward. Besides the main barn building, there is the "Tree House" and the newest "Jack London's Cabin". We are a B&B/Inn and our hosted guests can be small or large groups. We have cable and free Wi-Fi available to our guests in many of our rooms. With spacious clean rooms, each chamber has a theme with genuine objects to match their stories. Our Inn guests sleep comfortably, and receive a 20% discount for their Crepe breakfasts. Anyone with gluten difficulties, we also use Sarasin (Buckwheat) for gluten-free crepes. Come witness the creation of our gourmet Belgian crepes prepared before your eyes to your liking on our custom Creperie created in the summer of 2004. Try Janet's rich Belgian waffles made from scratch with fresh fruit in season, topped with all the other fixings. Breakfast, meal crepes, and dessert crepes are available to the general public. We are open daily form 7AM to 4 PM. Families are welcome ... more   less
