“Oooo, the Taroka Inn is difficult to rate ...”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

OK ... how do you rate a hotel that is old old old and worn out? The buildings are sinking into the ground; some doors close, many do not. A few things are fixed and somewhat modern (e.g, some of the sinks), but much is not. There are some nice kitchens and rooms, some not. But it was a good night's sleep at a reasonable price for Seward in the summertime. And we did have use of a full kitchen, which we took advantage of. Oooo ... how do you rate this one? I would stay here again if I had to ... OK ... well maybe I would stay again even if I didn't have to ... OK ... well maybe I wouldn't. It is definitely the worst hotel outwardly that I've stayed at in a long time, but I sort of enjoyed it. So, if you stay, don't set your expectations too high, but it is an experience you probably won't forget and probably won't regret. Would you remember the Best Western Hotel in Seward if you stayed there ... probably not ... but the Taroka ... probably yes. Enjoy.

The owner of the hotel is very friendly, the location is one block from Seward Sea Life Center, rooms a very clean, very large, with nice kitchen. The hotel is old from outside, but it is a good value and easy to book and nice to stay there.

The host was an extremely hospitable and friendly person. For our first night in Alaska, it was good to start here. The best part for us we discovered was that this was walking distance from the Sealife Center. Half the family was able to walk there while the other half went/drove off for Kayaking.

The place is older wooden buildings though generally clean. Good option for the budget family traveller. Had the necessary essentials.

This is a single story wood building that was apparently used as officer housing during WWII. It fits right in with the rest of the immediate area. This part of town is old and it looks it. That's not a bad thing. It has character.

The room we were in had a small kitchen and living room area. There was a bed in the living room area. There was a bedroom off the living room and another bedroom on the other side of the the first bedroom. The bathroom was in the first bedroom.

The place is creaky and the foundation was settled a good bit over the years; the front door to the place won't even open all the way anymore. Also, there is a bit of an aroma to the place that just smells like a really old house.

Now, having said all that, we were in Seward to fish. The Taroka was just a place to sleep. For that purpose, it was just fine. If you're hung up on the hotel being an important part of your visit to Seward then this might not be the place for you. However, if you want a very convenient place to stay that's just one block off the downtown Seward "strip", the Taroka will work for you.

A 1970s style apartment with dark paneling and harvest gold appliances. If you are looking for a clean bed without concern of appearances, this is your place. Very friendly people who are accommodating. The rooms are more like little apartments off the main house. Just like home linens. If you want all the amenities, probably not the place for you.

Sometime in the past this building was owned by the military and used as Officer’s Quarters, though I’m not sure what period that was. Whenever it was, I don’t think it has changed a whole lot since then. We were i unit #2. Very dark and gloomy but fairly roomy with two queen beds, a small kitchen area, and bath but awkwardly arranged with access to the bath through one of the bedrooms. The rooms had a “Glade” air freshener covering the musty smell with that sickeningly sweet smell that most air fresheners have. Unplugged the air freshener soon after arriving. The musty smell was better than the “fresh” smell. Some of the other rooms might possibly have been updated since the officers lived there, but don't think this one had been. The Crab Pot restaurant is right next door and, though we did not eat there, looked like a nice place and may have been connected in some way to the inn. WiFi worked fine as did the TV. Kitchen had gas stove, refrig, microwave, etc. but was somewhat cramped and not well supplied with dishes or utensiles. Price was $133 per night and, for that price or a little more, I'm sure there are better options.
