“Excellent Stay!”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

My wife and I stayed for one night while visiting Seward. We were greeted at the door and given a tour of the location. Our room was beautiful, clean and spacious - with a wonderful view of the peaks. We were given information about where to eat and play and all questions were thoroughly answered. Before dinner we went on a short kayak on Bear Lake and saw some bald eagles! We were given ice cream at 8PM and it was delicious!! Our sleep was quiet and comfortable and the shower/bathroom was great. In the morning the breakfast was set out for us and it was great!

I would highly recommend this B&B!!

We stayed 2 nights in the Bear Lake Lodging's 3rd floor guest rooms and shared a bathroom with my sister and her husband. It was a lovely setting and we enjoyed canoeing on the lake. The beds were wonderful. We slept with the windows open and enjoyed the peace and quiet and the cool breeze. The rooms were large and had enough space for all our things and a nice closet too. The ice cream offered at 8:30 every night was yummy--easily became addicted to it!

The B&B is remote enough to be quiet and close enough to see everything. It is near Exit Glacier and the Iditarod dog sled rides and we did both.

Remember to book your lodgings early in Alaska. With only 3-4 months of tourist season, they fill up fast.

Room Tip: 3rd floor rooms were nice, but remember--they are 3rd floor, no elevator--but we highly recommend th...

The third floor rooms work very well for guests who are traveling with family or friends. Sharing a bath is not for everyone, so if it's more a family situation it's a plus with a good cost savings. Otherwise, we offer bathrobes to guests for use during their stay. Happy our rooms worked out well for this guest reviewer.

The quiet of our local surroundings give a lovely feel of a remote location, but still keeping us close to the tourist services desired in our small town. We are only 4 miles from the boat harbor where the tour boats and some of our 5 star restaurants are located. We are only 5 miles from town and 3 miles to the road to Exit Glacier. Happy the reviewer made it to visit the Seavey Family dog kennels and get to experience some of the excitement of running the famous Iditarod Dog Sled Race.

Great tip regarding booking your accommodations early - as the better B&B's fill up quickly!

Thank you for your nice comments and happy you took time to try a few fun activities in our area of Alaska!

We were two couples. Nice rooms with shared bath. Quiet. Everything in good shape and clean. But owner has a larger number of rules than most B&B's and some seemed a bit obsessive. Evening ice cream ritual was nice. Location on lake outside of town meant car ride to restaurants and sights, but no issue since most travelers will have rental car, as we did.

Happy guests enjoyed the 3rd floor rooms which share the one bath. It does work well for families and friends traveling together, and makes for a good cost savings.

Little surprised by guest comments of our guidelines being too obsessive. We often joke that a B&B would make a great reality TV show, with the unexpected things that happen. So to assure continuity for all our guests in our B&B at anytime, with the daily turnover of guests, we have a few B&B guidelines. As with most B&B's or vacation rental properties the guest making the reservation is the only one in a group who reads the property guidelines and polices. We have found it essential to have all guests informed of our simple guidelines to enhance their stay and that of all others for safety, comfort and enjoyment. Our guest's introduction to the property and their rooms has eliminated most of the opportunities for confusion and ensured their safety and comfort.

Our lakeside location and insurance mandates we explain specific basic requirements of our kayaks and canoe use - ie - wearing a PFD, their location, hours of use, and signing a liability waiver. We ask guests to enjoy common areas until 10:00 PM, as many guests have early morning departures for tours, all guests have keys to come and go at anytime. Guests are shown their rooms - not just pointed in a direction, but with the Innkeeper noting the safety escape plan for any emergency. The rooms on the 3rd floor where this guest stayed, we also have fire escape ladders for an additional safe exit. These are shown to these room guests and always explained in jest "The hammer on top is to break the window - should you not be able to open it, we just ask you to not practice!" which always brings a laugh!

VERY HAPPY, the guest review did not have to mention any loud noises at night from other guests or not having a clue how to exit during an emergency or ??? any of the things that make great reality TV shows. Instead, we are thrilled he found a QUIET, very GOOD SHAPE and CLEAN accommodations. Where, as reviewer noted, we serve hand dipped in pure chocolate ice cream bars nightly to guests. YUMMY and a great social hour - the memories which make a B&B stay special!

We stayed overnight at Bear Lake Deck Suite. I wish we had more time in the area. The Bear Lake Lodgings is located in the lovely neighborhood on the beautiful lake; it offers pleasant B&B experience. We arrived just in time for 8pm ice-cream - great opportunity to meet other guests, and share the travel stories.

Innkeeper Erin gave us a quick tour of our room and common area on arrival before leaving on vacation herself; she seemed very professional and knowledgeable. Breakfast next day was prepared by Ann. It was so-so, but from reviews I think it’s better when Erin is around.
The Bear Lake Deck Suite is located on the second floor of the house were kitchen and cozy family room is. It provides spacious and comfortable accommodations for 3.

Only Con: The bed in our room was uncomfortable. It’s the reason I am giving Bear Lake Lodgings 4*, otherwise it would be 5*.

My son and I enjoyed canoeing in the morning. The scenery is incredible from the lake.

Reviewer enjoyed all their experiences with us except for one item. We could have helped out if we had been alerted, but the guest might not have realized his problem until morning. A bad night of sleep on an uncomfortable bed is sad for a traveler. All our beds have memory foam topper on top of a the better quality mattresses as stated on our room descriptions on our website. The suite the guest was staying in has the best new Costco gel memory foam bed topper. If we'd known they wanted a firm bed, the topper could have been removed. Future guests - let us know if a memory topper needs to be removed to increase your sleep quality, we are ready to please you and get it handled! This is our first complaint on memory foam bed toppers and the raves for that particular bed have been overwhelming - just shows we all have different backs! Thank you for the comments and happy we pleased you in other areas of your stay.

The B&B was very nice in and of itself. The room was clean with plenty of space and bathroom was clean as well. From the beginning the lady they had helping with everything was a backhanded mean. We arrived less than 10 minutes before check-in and knew we were early and would have waited in our car, but she had us go ahead and come in then complained about how we were early and how they had to stop cutting the icecream since we interrupted. (The icecream bars at night were a nice treat, although they say homeade, the icecream is just generic vanilla bought from the store that they cut up and dip in chocolate and a topping for you it is not homeade icecream.) She then proceeded to talk our ears off offering advice we didn't ask for, I'm glad we didn't follow where they told us not to go (chinooks, saying it was too expensive) because it was a fabulous meal and the prices were on par with everywhere else and we were glad we went. The kayaks they provided were nice although they didn't give very good directions as to where we should go to see the bears they just pointed us in one direction and not which side or what would be near. When we checked in we had pizza we wanted to put in the fridge, so instead of letting us go put it in the guest fridge she said she would take it. Little did we know until we left in the morning and were getting our breakfast out of the guest fridge in the garage (that was nice that they packed it for us since we had to leave early) that she left it out on top of the fridge all night. They also didn't warn us that the doors locked automatically behind us so we had to ring the doorbell to get back in after taking our things to our car. She then acted all upset that she had to get up so much earlier than normal (she was going to be serving breakfast in less than an hour so it couldn't have been too early). I would recommend this in a future year if they had a different helper.

Clearly our Innkeeper and the guests did not click in their personalities types. Erin is a kind and consider host and made a very good impression on our guests during her stay as Innkeeper for a portion of summer 2013. We are sorry for the confusion that started with their arrival. We feel it's important to state a few items mentioned in the review from our perspective for our future guests.

Our nightly chocolate treats of hand dipped ice cream bars are not marketed in any of our B&B information as "homemade", only has hand dipped. Our other business is marking it's 30th year for serving this product at special events throughout Alaska. The ice cream used at the B&B is hand-cut, than dipped into pure chocolate and rolled in almonds or crushed Oreo cookies. We found it odd to have a complaint about such a yummy and complimentary evening treat and a lovely time for the guests to gather.

We may tend to give too much information on our area, but with lots to share to be sure the guests are safe in the adventures on the lake and explain the note worthy "don't miss" items near the B&B. All guests are given a similar introduction to the amenities of the B&B and information on items available for them to use. One of the best benefits of staying in a B&B, versus at hotel, is the in depth local information by B&B staff!

As a courtesy we keep a notebook with most of the menus for the restaurants in Seward, all guests are shown this with our simplified price rating stickers. Our staff could never tell guests to not go to a restaurant, actually we highly refer Chinooks as we greatly respect the chef's talent and background. The notebook even has the latest press release on the restaurant posted next to the menu pages. Somewhere - a missed communication occurred in sharing of restaurant referrals?

A portion of the B&B introduction is explaining the lake, it's fish habitat and where to paddle to see the spawning fish. Where the fish are spawning is where a bear MIGHT be dining - with confusion on the restaurants - there was also on the bears dining. We WARN about bears - and have guests read a disclaimer about their interaction with them - should they see one. We do not guarantee bear viewing.

Case of the un-refrigerated pizza box - after talking with all staff working during that period of time, it was placed in the refrigerator by the Innkeeper. She prepared their to go breakfast bags and moved the box around in the refrigerator to accommodate their bag breakfasts. It is unfortunate the box was later removed and placed on top the fridge, it was undoubtedly done by any of the 9 other B&B guests who, like the reviewer and her travel mate, had 24 hour access to the guest fridge and needed more space for their items.

The guests did unfortunately lock themselves out of the house in the early morning, a note is posted on the front door that it is locked during a specific time - for the safety of all. The Innkeeper did respond as quickly as possible, awaking from a sound sleep to assist the guests and quiet the noise for other sleeping guests.

Erin did a very good job as Innkeeper and found this review disheartening. She has returned to her normal position as college professor and we hope the remarks of these reviewers are seen as some major communication misses!

Our family of 2 adults and 1 kid stayed in the Mt. Tiehacker room, it's so comfy and so clean. We shared restroom with another couple, it's not trouble-some since it is right outside. The B&B has everything that you need. Homemade breakfast was so delicious that made us ready for whole day fun. Ice-cream bars and hot cocoa were ready when we came back from our day trip. We shared our excitement with other families while having breakfast and ice-cream, it's a nice hang out time. This B&B is situated by the lake, the scenery is amazing. We even spotted a red spawning salmon swimming in the lake. We would try the kayaks if the weather was good. The housekeeper Erin is so friendly - what a hospitality host! She offered so much info and discount coupons for other activities. Thank you for a comfortable stay.
