“Best dining experience ever!”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

Tony at Gastro Mare is a master at hospitality and simple, gourmet, delicious dining!! Visited Tony twice in two weeks! He was closed for the season but opened for us and our sailing crew on two occasions! Upon arrival he greeted us with cocktails and then cooked as we watched and tasted his culinary master pieces! Tony has med mooring for up to 10 boats and he also has hot showers, electricity hook ups and water. The food was amazingly prepared and fresh! Loved every minute of our time at Gastro Mare!! Can't wait to visit Tony again next year!!

“Fabulous Mediterranean experience”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

Wonderful lunch in a spectacular setting. Food amazing - delightful antipasti, pasta aux truffles to die for and gorgeous catch of the day for main course. Local wine delicious and service excellent. Children catered for well - plain pasta, etc. The dessert (chocolate tart with vanilla ice cream) was amazing.

Sail or motor in and enjoy!

“Culinary excellence off the beaten path”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

Gastro Mare was designed for the summer nautical cruisers: a stone platform where you can moor, disembark and shower before settling into a leisurely "gastronomique" experience. There is no menu. The owner/chef, Toni Bjelancic, comes to you and describes what he is cooking that day. He takes you for a tour of the wine closet and the open kitchen where you can chat with the staff who are eager to share their enthusiasm for the food.
Access by land is by the causeway along the Ston salt pans toward Broce where you pick up the narrow road to Kobas. Because of the narrowness of the road and lack of light after dark, the better choice is to call the restaurant and get picked up (free of charge) by motor dinghy from the red signal light at Ston's harbor or from the harbor at Broce.
The food is "sea-to-table" fresh. On one of our visits, staff showed us all the enormous grouper Toni caught that day that was going to be our main course and went around the corner of the dock to clean it, to the delight of the gulls. The restaurant has its own vegetable garden, too. Inspired by local traditions, the cuisine is sophisticated and elegant, using layers of ingredients to create complexity and balance in the flavors and a beautiful presentation.
The restaurant is nestled in the cove with two other more typically simple cafes near the junction of the Ston Channel with the Adriatic. Kobas is a small fishing village where Toni grew up before pursuing his culinary career in Philadelphia, the Viking cruise line and his own restaurants in Norway and now in Vienna.
More expensive than the usual fare in the area's simpler restaurants, we thought it good value based on our experience with comparable places in our home towns in New York City and Berkeley, California. Four courses of antipasto, pasta, main and dessert with two bottles of wine for 4 people cost us between 1600 and 1900 kunas.
We enjoyed the food, setting and company so much, we came to Gastro Mare four times during our two week stay in Mali Ston.
