In our opinion you won't find a better place to stay on this island
that isn,t located on the ocean. This place is in walking distance of the pacific. The ladies in the office were all terrific.
you have two very wonderful golf courses which practially surround this place. KONA CC.

We stayed at the Wyndham Mauna Loa for a week as an "extra" vacation through RCI.

As has been stated, the grounds are gorgeous and the resort is among the most peaceful that can be found anywhere. Each unit is spacious and has a lanai that is perfect for eating, playing cards, or just sitting and reading. There are many beautiful "critters" that can be found on the grounds, i.e small green lizards, colorful birds, and even mongoose.

Our unit was beginning to show its age (carpeting, bathrooms, very thin walls); however, this was not a major concern. By and large, the pros far outweighed the cons.

For those who wish to keep costs down, there is a supermarket within a mile at the Keauhou Shopping Center. Buy your groceries there and you'll save a lot on meals during the week (even if all you do is buy breakfast foods). Some other recommended establishments/activities in the area are the Greenwell Farms coffee tour, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau Park (where you can bask with turtles), the incredible Hapuna Beach, the Malama Petroglyph Trail, and the Verandah Lounge at the Outrigger Keauhou Resort (which overlooks tidepools - more turtles - and is stunning at sunset).

Avoid Rocky's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria - where the food, drinks, and service were sub-standard.

  • Liked — Beautiful grounds, peaceful location, convenience to various activities
  • Disliked — Towels should be of better quality and should be changed more often.

We stayed at the Wyndham from 12/14 through 12/21. It was a beautiful, second floor unit with a nice lanai next to the pool. The room was clean, with nice furniture and a nice kitchen. We loved playing in the pool and in the jacuzzi. The resort was not right on the beach but was within walking distance of several beaches in the area. Our favorite nearby beach was the beach near the harbor in Kona so that our 2.5 year old could play without being hit by the larger waves. THere was also a nice beach within 10 minutes called the Old Airport beach where there were several protected kieki beaches where he could play. We walked down and had coffee and breakfast at Java on the Rocks and ate at Huggo's one night---both very good but also expensive. THere were other very good restaurants just down the street in Kona that were not quite as expensive and good but not right on the ocean. This was a good resort for families with children and the staff were all very nice and helpful.

My wife and I are very happy Wyndham owners. We stayed the first week of September in a two bedroom unit we reserved through an RCI exchange. The property is absolutely beautiful and has a very quiet and peaceful atmosphere. The location is ideal for those who desire to enjoy the activities without all the noise and chaos of being right in the middle of Kona. The few miles we drove to get downtown was a very beautiful drive. I highly recomend Dolphin Adventures for your snorkeling trip. They were wonderful and went out of their way to give us a great trip. You must eat at Lava Java which is right on the water downtown. The food is wonderful and if you go around 6PM the sunset is amazing. Our only complaint is that there was no television in the second bedroom which made the guest have to go upstairs. The staff was excellent and very helpful even when we made changes to our plans. Donald went out of his way to give us information on free adventures and places to go to see things that only the locals would know about. We plan to send our married children back to this resort next year.

  • Liked — location and serenity of the atmosphere. The kindness and help of the staff
  • Disliked — internet service to the room i had to use dial up

The room was wonderful and the grounds were absolutely great. We had the pool all to ourselves. Close to the ocean and very quiet. We even used there BBQ grill that they have a condos. Absolutly love it. The only problem here to us was a big one. The expedia tour advisor was very pushy. She tried to keep having us book very expensive outings that we could not afford. Very pushy and down right rude. I believe that her name Darmony. The check in lady was very nice. The man that was also there was a bit pushy too. He was with the timeshare company. He gives a great morning presentation about things to do on the island and that is the only thing that saved him. And about there leis. They give you there 5 for a dollar shell lei's that came from Walmart. Not the greatest start to the whole Hawaiian Vacation. I recieved a better greeting from someone outside Hugo's bar and resturant by a complete stranger with a real flower lei.

Oh and just a pointer. If you want to go see anything free around the island don't ask the staff there. They always have something much better to see that cost like $600 a person. For example going and seeing the manta rays for free at the Sheriton. They told me that we had the wrong hotel in mind and that we would not see any way. Well we went and we saw 3 manta rays and even got the presentation about them. One was 14 feet wide. Very beautiful. All for free. Here is the kicker, they said that they had no idea where it was at. Well you know where it was? One block past Mauna Loa Village. Yeah and they said that they had no idea where it was at. Very slimy.

  • Liked — How big and beautiful the grounds were. Tons of flowers everywhere and a pool to yourself
  • Disliked — The colors were not all that great, but that is a small thing. The expedia staff was terrible

We have stayed here twice! The last time was in Feb. 2006.
Very comfortable stay! The property is quiet and close enough to but also far enough away from the mainstream to make it feel as if you are hidden away at times.
The staff have always been wonderful!
Condos are large with all the amenities.
Close by shopping makes it very handy.
Give it a try, I think you'll be happy!

After reading other reviews on the Mauna Loa, I was expecting a "less than perfect" week at this location. Our unit was in excellent condition, the landscaping was constantly being manicured, we were right next to a very nice pool and close to the office. We spent the second week at the Kona Hawaiian Village and both locations are "crown" ratings in my book. I am a travel agent, so I see quite a few places. This trip to the Big Island was a great experience, and I can't wait to go back.
