“Loved the laidback ambience of the Kona Reef”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2007

Stayed for 5 nights from the 20th March 07 and it was much too short. The resort was great, not luxurious but clean and with everything that you need for a relaxing holiday. The pool and the BBQ area was excellent and the location perfect.
Our condo was ocean front, spotlessly clean and on the 1st floor (I think you would say 2nd... but in Aust. we have a ground floor) Everything that you can imagine was available for a great holiday. Snorkeling gear, beach towels, binoculars, books. We could have left half of our gear at home. We loved our balcony so much that we had almost every meal off it. Incredible sunsets, surfers and dolphins and the sea crashing on to the big black rocks below was amazing. The only thing that would have made it even better would have been blackout curtains in the bedroom. We highly recommend this resort. We booked VRBO 8296..owner was very helpful.

My husband and I just celebrated 10 years of marriage with a trip to the Big Island. We stayed in a privately owned condo at the Kona Reef. Condo D-12. This condo has a fabulous view of the ocean from the lanai. The entire complex is quiet and very relaxing. It was such
a better option for us to be able to cook a steak on one of the stainless gas grills in the pool area. It really cuts down on all the
eating out. The complex provides access to a computer/internet during
office hours in case you forget your computer, has a pool, hot tub, large grills and preparation area to include a sink. The condo is close to area shopping and restaurants as well as all the snorkeling sites! The condo itself is fabulous, and very clean! The owners treat you like friends in planning for your vacation. They have games, movies, books, snorkeling gear, binoculars, all the kitchen equipment you could possibly need to include spices and condiments, washer and dryer, and a dishwasher. We had a great time and will be returning as soon as possible!

We stayed in a one bedroom, ocean view room on the 3rd floor. I thought the location was great, I could walk to the shopping area (even though I was pregnant, not a problem!) - and some restaurants were close by. There is a small sandy beach nearby, which was nice to sit on. The weather was great, especially for January. I don't have any complaints about this place, and would stay there again.

The Location was perfect for us on this trip. We stayed at the Kona Reef Feb. 20-25th 2007 for our honeymoon after spending 6 days in Kauai. The location of the Kona Reef was perfect for us to get away from everyone and just relax. We were in an oceanfront condo bottom floor Unit D1. It was good but nothing spectacular. I am so glad that we upgraded to ocean front. The condo was fine. Upside was the few minute walk into town for dinner & drinks! We were literally right next to the pool area. The pool was clean & COLD! The hottub was great, the view from the pool area was nice & there was always an available lounge chair. The BBQ area was great we used that as well and I liked the fact that there were bathrooms in the pool area AND that you had to use a pool key to get in. Our condo was so-so but had a great view. I loved having a full kitchen and a washer & dryer. I wasn't impressed with the lobby/check in area or the noise from the bedroom. You can hear people out at the pool/hottub area & people walking by. The A/C was great to have but is only in the living room so it gets warm in the bedroom :) Overall I would stay at the Kona Reef again but I would probably try to get an ocean front higher up than the ground floor. Our 3 favorite restaurants were Jamisons, Kona Brewery and Oceans Bar & Grill! All were great food & drinks!

  • Liked — The Location & the View
  • Disliked — Lobby/Check In Area and non locking sliding glass door

Enjoyed our too short stay in D36 - an oceanfront condo. Beautiful view, clean and well equipped, close to great restaurants and shopping, beside a delightful beach, nice pool area and BBQ, with helpful and efficient front desk. Would stay here again in a heartbeat and would certainly choose an oceanfront condo - the view and the gorgeous sunsets are worth every penny. Mahalo!!

The oceanfront units in this unit are just fabulous - practically looking down on the water. We stayed in Unit A33, but would recommend anything in building A (and probably building D, although we never actually entered it). Saw whales and sea turtles from the lanai, and were entertained by surfers every day. Very convenient to town (about 1/4 mile), and no traffic noise at all. Unit was well-decorated, well furnished, well-maintained and clean. Only complaint was that the pool area key supplied by the renting agency (Sunquest) didn't work, and the on-site condo managers wouldn't give or even loan us a replacement. Thankfully their groundskeepers were a little more cooperative, and let us in & out as needed.

  • Liked — Ocean view, near to town
  • Disliked — Condo managers seem a little indifferent to short-term tenants

My husband and I stayed at the Castle Kona (room A24) from Feb. 7-12, 2007. The balcony seemed to hang out over the shoreline, it was so close. I half expected a surfer to land at our feet, ha. We watched whale's out on the horizon, saw large turtles come up on the beach, and enjoyed the sunsets.

The condo's furnishings were very nice, and the bed was quite comfortable. However, this was a queen-sized bed made up with king-size sheets and a double-size blanket. Damnest combination!

The kitchen and bath were very clean; however, the condo's walls and woodwork needed a good scrubbing. There was an ironing board in the closet that was completely rusted. I found it odd that only one towel rack was in the bathroom, even though there was plenty of room for more.

Overall, I was pleased with our accomodations, although a little more attention to details would have resulted in an excellent rating instead of just above average.
