My family and I had a wonderful time at this location and would return here again and again. We checked in after hours and the process was perfect, just as they had explained. This facility gets everything right. The pool, the grills, and the cabana area are impecable. The rates are super reasonable and the full kitchen allows you to save money by eating in. The kitchen was fully stocked with all the supplies needed to cook meals for my family. This residence even supplied coolers, boogie boards, and snorkel gear. I was very impressed.
We had a one bedroom with an ocean view. Our only issue is that the beds were not comfortable... but we made it work.

We've stayed at the Kona reef for a couple of weeks in June for a number of years (to celebrate the school year ending). We've always loved it there, especially how close the condos are to the ocean. The people are always friendly, both the staff and other guests, and we especially like how close the property is to the stores and restaurants on Alii Drive. This year when I called to make a reservation, I learned about the new $10/night utilities fee (or maybe it's called an energy fee -- I don't remember). We decided to look into the possibility of staying at another condo. But when we started looking at what else was available, first of all, there were not many that are as close to downtown Kona (we sometimes walk there a couple of times a day) so that was a big disadvantage. Then, one place we looked at charges $15/night if you want to use the air-conditioning. Many of the other condos have a charge for using Wi-Fi and some of them only have Wi-Fi in certain areas of the complex, not in every condo. Some places had a "booking charge" (whatever that is) of 10%. The place next to the Kona Reef charges the guest if you want to use a credit card. In other words, there seemed to be charges at every condo place. A lot of them say they're near the ocean but when we looked at the arial maps in the blue book (BI Revealed) we could see that they weren't as close to the ocean as the website made you think. So, by the time we looked at all that, we realized that the Kona Reef, even at $10 more per night, was the best deal for us. I guess we've always taken for granted the free parking, free Wi-Fi and free air conditioning there. We didn't know that other places in Kona charge for those things so I guess the $10/night charge isn't as bad as we first thought. So, we went on our usual June holiday and, as always loved being at the Kona Reef. We'll be back next June!

Room Tip: Buildings A and D are the oceanFRONT buildings. OceanVIEW is nice but can't compare to oceanFRON...

We had a 1 bedroom ocean view. Very nice. Check-in was a bit confusing as we arrived late and the front desk is already closed, but they made it easy through instructions and there was a security guard that helped us out a bit. We didn't get to check-in at the front desk 'til two days later and it was fine.

Upon arrival, the place doesn't have Central A/C, but was able to cool the whole place enough. Wi-fi available. Utensils, pots, pans, etc. provided and were all useful. Didn't get to use it much though. They also had a boogie board and Styrofoam coolers you can use. I would suggest that if you will choose this option, that you will spend a good amount of time in your condos because they do charge 10 something dollars a day for utilities.

Room Tip: Do not rent if you spend more time outdoors. There are cheaper hotels.

We had the best time of our lives. I did not give this the best rating for a few reasons:

Someone came into our room at 1am with a key, drunk and stating loudly that someone was in their room. Very bad situation for all becasue it freigntened my kids and I had to literally argue with the people as they stood outside our door argueing for an hour.

The posts and pans are useless as they burn everything or don't cook thouroughly, could not regulate the heat.

The condo was not the cleanest.

Overall everyone was friendly and our trip was great. I will look to rent here again because.

Room Tip: Overall this was a decent place and I have recommended it to friends. Only stayed in the one condo.

We are sorry to hear of your unfortunate and unusual situation this past January. No such incident was ever reported to security or the on-site management company so we were not aware of it. The Kona Reef has an on-site security guard who walks the entire complex every hour in addition to monitoring video surveillance. Had security been called, someone would have been there within minutes and the issue could have been easily resolved. The Kona Reef is a very safe and quiet complex and our guests’ security is very important to us. Each professionally-managed condo has the number for security posted inside the unit and/or it is provided upon check-in. Keys are not marked with unit numbers and if a key is lost or not turned in upon departure, the locks are changed. Despite this, we are glad that you had a wonderful stay and plan to return. Thank you for your comments.

We had a 1 bdrm unit with a balcony that had a beach/ocean view. After saying in many comparable timeshare condos, this one is above average on some things and below average on others. The resort is a small building situated between a fairly busy road on one side, and the ocean on the other. The ocean frontage is all rocky lava with a small beach on the south side of the resort. The best units would be on the 3rd or 4th floor close to the ocean. The location of this resort is terrific. Walking distance to shops, restaurants, and right on the ocean. We had a washer/dryer which was great. The resort itself is clean and well maintained. Our 1 bdrm unit was very small compared to other resorts I've stayed in, but had everything we needed. It was ok size for 2 people for a week but I would not want to have 4 people staying in a unit this size. One of the big negatives was that it was very noisy. There was no AC in the bedroom but there were ceiling fans which kept the room a comfortable temperature but we still had to leave the bedroom windows open. The bedroom faced onto the interior walkway of the resort and there seemed to be lots of people walking around and talking late at night and very early morning, combined with the road noise I found it difficult to sleep and finally resorted to using earplugs. The kitchen was tiny but well equipped, but so small there were no cupboards to put groceries. There is no gym or fitness room, we did not use the pool or BBQ area although it looked nice. Overall we had a pleasant stay. The biggest issue that would deter me from returning is that as of May 1 the resort is slapping on a $10/day "utility fee".

Did not expect to get this fabulous ocean front room (a3) via our timeshare. We must have lucked out. Check in was easy, room is spacious and clean. Love watching the boogie boarders from patio. Kitchen and bath supplies seemed sparse, but we certainly managed. No complaints.

We really loved this place! We were lucky to have an ocean view, so every morning we could watch all the surfers as we had our coffee on the lanai. It was a short walking distance to all the great restaraunts and shopping. The place was very clean, also the pool and grounds were well looked after daily. Will for sure be back here again!
