“Smokers beware”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

Let me just say its a wonderful place no beach swimming but, if you are a smoker and follow there smoking rules expect to pay 260.42 for there cleaning charge. My husband NEVER smoked inside the unit and hardly ever had the sliding door open. Yet when I got home the told me they found cigarette butts and the place smelled of smoke. Well let me tell you my husband smokes cigars and there were no butts. Now Im fighting this charge with the credit card company.
So for you smokers dont smoke near or arond this place. Even though its allowed outside, unless you want to pay extra. Sorry but this left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Aloha,
it is a policy of the resort that smoking is prohibited in all guest rooms and room lanais throughout the resort. Guests are advised of the policy upon check-in. You were given a copy of the houserules and were given a map of the smoking area locations. Unfortunately we received a complaint about smoking in your unit and after physically checking it, it was determined that the $260 fine would have to be assessed. Mahalo.

We rented unit D-18 for a week and were impressed. It was in a quiet location within walking distance from town with great ocean view. We loved having two bedrooms with separate bathrooms. There was only one air conditioner (at the front of the unit), and it was far from the master bedroom at the back of the unit. Everything was clean. Great for getting away from stress.

Aloha!

Thank you for sharing your comments on Trip Advisor, but Castle Hotels & Resorts does not manage the unit that you were staying in at the Kona Reef. My suggestion would be to contact the owner and find out where you can post your comments. Mahalo!

We had never been to the big island so this was a new experience all the way around. We wanted to take our extended family so we were able to exchange our timeshare weeks for four 1-bedroom condo's at this resort through RCI. Although we were spread out through the resort, it still worked out well.
We arrived late in the evening and it was confusing when we found the front desk closed but made a couple phone calls and found that RVC, who rents out a portion of the resort, had an office a few doors away but finally connected with them and checked in. All of the units that we had were a little bit different in design but had plenty of room. Two of the units had an ocean view and 2 of them had a pool view with a partial ocean view. They all were a little worn but we were not expecting anything different. They all had cooking facilities with everything we needed to make meals. They all had a large lanai with table and chairs which we used a lot everyday and watched the wonderful sunsets in the evening. There is air conditioning in the living room but none in the bedrooms. They were equipped with ceiling fans which helped at night. The only down side to the condo's were the bathrooms. They were small and had only a wall hung sink with no room to put toiletries. Also, the TV's were tiny. They could really improve on that one.
The resort overall was very clean. The pool area was very nice with a barbecue area and a separate hot tub. It was never really very busy the whole time we were there and always had lounge chairs available. You always needed a key to get into the pool area and that was a little inconvenient when you have a lot of people coming and going but we made it work out. The maid service was only twice during the week and we had to request TP and soap several times. They changed the sheets and straightened things up a bit but there was no thorough cleaning done during the week we were there. They had plenty of parking area and did not charge for it.
The shoreline in front of the resort is very close and had a lot to see. It is mainly an all rocky area with a small beach to the south end of the resort. It is not good for swimming but the surfers and boogy boarders were always out in front riding the waves. They were there when it broke daylight and were there until it got too dark at night. There were always sea turtles to see that were stranded in the tide pools and also all kinds of crabs and other small sea creatures.
The resort is also quite close to downtown Kailua and was easy to walk to for eating out, entertainment and shopping. You definitely do not want to drive in this area at night if you have been drinking. It is much easier to walk and not have to worry about the local police. If you do drive through this area, definitely obey the speed signs, do not use a cell phone or any device in the vehicle. They set up spotters along the main street and called ahead to police cruisers on anyone they see using phone or going over the 15 miles per hour speed limit.
The staff at RVC were a great help. They loaned us swim gear, coolers, beach chairs, boogy boards or whatever they had available at no cost. They always responded quickly if we needed anything in the room and was very helpful in setting up excursions and a luau.
All in all, we had a wonderful time at this resort and would recommend it to anyone. Very convenient to downtown and wonderful views of the ocean and easy to get to.

Room Tip: Definitely try to get an ocean view....

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location, the people we met and the aloha spirit made our visit that much better. The sound of the waves crashing in the background in our ocean side unit washed away any stress we brought with us. We would be happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: The ocean front rooms are worth the extra money. Waking up in the morning watching the ocean with ou...

We rented unit D-26 through VRBO directly through the owners, Bruce and Alice. Cannot say enough wonderful things about their unit and the Kona Reef!! We have stayed at many properties on the various islands and by far, this one tops them all!!! Located oceanfront on the third floor the unit was very comfortable and extremely well furnished with tons of supplies.....kitchen: spices, oil, baggies, paper towels, mayo, mustard, salad dressing, soy sauce, great cooking pans, etc. Bathroom: shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, bathroom spray, kleenex, hair dryer, sunscreen, Closet: ice chests, umbrella, chairs, snorkel gear, sand mats. Had fun BBQing by the pool visiting with the other folks..loved the pool area too. Our dream is to someday own a property at Kona Reef. Walk to the Royal Kona Hotel to the Don the Beachcomer bar and have the BEST Mai Tai (cheaper at happy hour 4-6). Huggos on the Rocks another fun place to sip a cocktail. Bite Me fish market at the harbor sells fresh fish to cook at the condo. You will not be disappointed if you stay in D-26!!!

Room Tip: get a room with a view of the ocean-rooms next to the pool are noiser.stayed in F5

My family and I have been staying at Kona Reef Resort for many years now; however, before last week, our most recent stay was about six years ago. Kona Reef Resort has always been a clean, cozy environment, conveniently located near town. We've always had a pleasant experience (although it's a frills-free kind of place), so we've continued to make the resort our home base when we come to Kona.

As such, it was quite a surprise and a disappointment to have a sub-par experience this time around. As the condos are individually owned, I understand that there are some things that may be outside of management control (for instance, the extremely uncomfortable bed and the AC unit, which was located across the condo from the bedroom and therefore did not provide any relief for the bedroom). I do, however, feel that there are minimum standards of cleanliness that resort management should strive to maintain. It would only take a quick look around condo B-2 to see that the bathroom floor and the kitchen floor (particularly around the refrigerator) that are in need of a very, very good scrubbing. Over the course of our stay, we found several bugs in the condo (from a small cockroach to some unidentifiable round bugs). I understand that Hawaii is a tropical environment and that some of the insects that thrive in such an environment will undoubtedly get inside (on past trips to Kona we've even had cockroaches in our rental cars), but I don't think it's a stretch to think that the cleanliness of a unit plays some role. It might be helpful for Kona Reef to implement daily maid service for its units, which it doesn't have (which isn't great if you're staying longer than a week, although there is a washer and dryer for towels and whatnot).

It probably also didn't help that the screen on the bedroom window was broken, although we kept the bedroom window closed for the duration since we did not want to let anything else inside.

To management's credit, when I brought these issues to the general manager's attention, she said that she would discuss them with her staff and the condo owners and make every attempt to fix the issues before the next guests' arrival. I found her openness to feedback and her prompt response to be very refreshing. I'm sure she will have a positive impact on Kona Reef Resort.
