I took my son in law and 7 month pregnant daughter to Hale Maluhia Country Inn for 4 days. We were all wowed by the ambiance, cleanliness, fantastic breakfasts, beautiful gardens and comfortable beds. The staff was helpful and friendly. It was delightful to watch the wildlife on the property including wild turkeys and several varieties of birds. Flowers were everywhere as well as all the rooms. We will definitely be back. We stayed at the Hale Maluhia Country Inn from August 12-15, 2008. We had flown to the big island a few days before and driven to the Volcano side, so we were pretty exhausted when we arrived. When we first got there, we checked into the Pikaki room. This is a private room away from the main house which wouldn't normally need air conditioning. However, the Kona side of the island has been getting a lot of rain, so it was really damp in the room. Fortunately, they had another room open in the main house that has an air conditioner (Makua room), and they moved us to that room. We really enjoyed this room - there's not a kitchenette in it, but you are right next to this humungous kitchen in the main house, so you pretty much have a full kitchen. Every morning they have breakfast from 8-9, and that includes make your own omelets and eggs, lots of fruits, breads and cereals. They have a beautiful porch you can sit on to eat, and there's a bird feeder where lots of neat birds come to eat. They also have chickens and wild turkeys on the property, which we enjoyed seeing around. The hot tub is very nice as well, and gets very hot! If you want to use it, make sure you tell them in the morning. They don't keep it on all the time, and they need some notice to heat it up. On our last day there, our flight didn't leave until 9:30 pm, and they were nice enough to let us leave our things in the house while we tromped around. They also have an extra shower in the library, so even if you don't have your room all day you can still take a shower. We would definitely stay there again and enjoyed it very much.

  • Liked — The make-you-own omelets for breakfast!
  • Disliked — Not much to say here - it is a little dark in the house overall, but that's about it.

Our stay in the Banyan cottage at the Hale Maluhia Country Inn was a highlight of a lifetime of travels. Our time there was truly a tonic for emotionally exhausted and harried mainlanders in search of old Hawaii and the meaning of aloha. The Banyan treehouse is a beautiful spacious wooden cottage with a unique combination of elegance and open ease both in its construction and interior spaces. Outside it is lovingly surrounded by lava rock walls, walkways and gardens. Inside it is rich in natural wood floors, surfaces and furnishings, a comfortable mixture of antiques and newer fine furniture. Its high ceilings and open space is alive with natural light shining thru large banks of clear windows and accented by artistic stained glass in the front door and over the hottub. The Smiths and their staff were kind and helpful at every turn in the true aloha spirit, also providing useful advice on what to see and where to go. Every breakfast buffet was a treat, generous, sumptuous and beautifully presented with flowers and leaves from the garden. The lava rock lanai garden with its softly murmuring water fountain was a restful & perfectly lovely place to enjoy breakfast. We were entertained at different times by wandering local wild turkeys, the Smiths' chickens & new baby chicks and various colorful wild birds coming to the feeders. I can't tell you how much we preferred the pampered yet "home away from home" feeling we got from staying at Hale Maluhia over the resort type accomodations/experience at a considerably lower price. The location was ideally just a bit off the beaten track yet still quite central to everywhere we wanted to go, from swimming with the brightly colored fish at the local coral reef beach in Kona, to shopping in town, to longer day trips to Mauna Kea observatory one direction, and then the other direction to Kilauea, the live volcano (which even started to spew rocks when we first arrived - fortunately it stopped spewing long enough for the Park service to reopen the park for our last day on the Big Island). All the other guests we met also enjoyed their accommodations in the main house and other buildings. We would recommend staying at the Hale Maluhia without reservation to anyone who is looking for a peacefully elegant bed&breakfast in a great location with excellent food and a family touch.

  • Liked — We felt pampered by the staff and elegant surroundings yet always relaxed & comfortably at home
  • Disliked — a bigger sink in the kitchenette perhaps would've been handy

We have just returned from a wonderful trip to Hawaii including a four night stay at the Hale Maluhia Country Inn. We stayed in the Makua room and it was lovely, with traditional Hawaiian decor and a very comfortable king size bed and air conditioning. The owners Ken and Sue were very friendly and helpful, as were the other employees we met. We especially liked the plentiful breakfast (great fruit, juices and make your own omlets).
We also appreciated the use of the snorkel equipment and chairs and towels for our visits to the beach. All in all it was a charming and quiet stay.

  • Liked — Country atmosphere and friendly hosts
  • Disliked — A fan in the veranda/breakfast area would be welcome

I wish we could give the accommodation a better review, because the owners are both very lovely people and the breakfast, complete with make-your-own-omelette station and fresh fruits, was delicious. The view from the breakfast lanai was also beautiful, and the property was lovely and wooded.

However, the room that we stayed in, the Maile room, was gross. The industrial carpet was worn in places, the room was overly humid and musty, the furniture looked very old, the bedding uncomfortable.

We were greeted by a wolf spider on the wall when we entered (which promptly hid somewhere, we had no idea where, before we could remove it - which freaked us out before going to bed) and a large centipede by the bathroom when we awoke.

The bathroom was pretty clean and the water pressure was okay, so that made the morning better. But we were glad to be heading out the next morning and very glad we only stayed there for a night on our arrival. The price was cheap, which is good, but I think next time I'll pay more and stay elsewhere.

I feel guilty writing this because the owners were so nice, but I have to be honest about how I feel. If you're okay with feeling like you're camping or staying in a rustic, unrenovated cabin, then this place would be fine - because the owners are great and the breakfast was tasty. I think the place was just a poor fit for us.

  • Liked — very nice owners
  • Disliked — insects, not feeling very clean

We are a COUNTY INN !
As some of our guests do not like bug spays and we do live in a very beautiful Hawaiian Country Oasis. We do have a little excitement for city slicker's from time to time with bugs.
We do have range chickens who mostly turn the bugs into eggs. And we have harmless wolf spiders and gecko's to help us as well. but about once or twice a year a centipede evades or chickens and decides it is nice inside and invites himself into a room as the door is left open or such. This guest must have had some serious aloha. They took a nice picture of their hunting expedition.

Also we were about to change the carpeting in the room and spruce it up. We are really sorry that we did not have it done prior to this up-town guest booking for a night. Of course a double full breakfast buffet with a queen bed, private bath, cable, broadband and private entry for $85. is not too high on the hog for Kailua-Kona. If they come back, we will give them a free night... Ken Smith, Owner

I was very comfortable during my stay at Hale Maluhia. Ken and Sue were wonderful hosts. I found it very relaxing to just hang around and enjoy the ambience. The Kona coffee early with a breakfast that was delicious with all the choices of fruit, cereal, homemade breads made my stay very enjoyable. In addition, I was able to cook my own breakfast with ham, eggs and any vegetable condiments I wanted.

I am a value concious traveler and Hale Maluhia was an outstanding value. I stayed at Hale Maluhia two different times over my 2 week plus stay for multiple nights in two different rooms. The rooms were very comfortable and internet access was excellent.

It is centrally located and I bicycled in and out at times during my stay. It is downhill to Kona and the climb back is not trivial but certainly doable. My wife and I are planning another trip to the Big Island in the next 6 months (I was alone this time) and will definitely stay here again.

From the start (booking), everything was wonderful here! Ken spoke with me on the phone, answered my questions, and sent out a great detailed email with directions from the airport. He also included in the email information on the island.

I was just a little worried about the size of the room, you can never tell from pictures. Well we were pleasently suprised! Our room (the Makua room) was nice, large and the King bed VERY comfortable. (We even slept for 12 hours straight on the second night!)

The breakfast's were wonderful, loved the fresh fruit and sitting on the lanai looking out over the yard with lots of birds, chickens and baby chicks.

They also provided us with an area to store our bags on our departure day while we were out sightseeing all day due to our late night departure. It was nice to be able to come "home" and change our clothes before the flight home after a day of sightseeing. We would definately stay here again!
