To celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, my wife and I have just returned from our 10th trip to the Hawaiian Islands. The Big Island of Hawaii has turned out to be our favorite, due to the fact that it has less traffic, more beaches and an active volcano. With every trip we try new restaurants and post our opinions on TripAdvisor. This trip was no exception. On the last evening of our stay we decided to have a light dinner and opted for sushi. Another couple at our hotel had recommended Sushi Shiono in downtown Kailua-Kona. What a pleasant surprise. The service was great and the food was wonderful. This place is Japanese owned and operated. When we were seated I looked around and it seemed as if half the people eating dinner were either Japanese or of Japanese origin. It was like eating in a local restaurant in Osaka, Japan, which I had eaten at 45 years ago. This place brought back a lot of good memories. The Sushi and Sashimi were very fresh and the Tempura was lightly breaded with a crispy Panko crust. If you’ve never tried cold saki, you might want to try their sake flight. They offer small glasses of different types of sake, to give you a feeling of what’s available. Overall this was a great dinner to cap off a wonderful vacation.
