“Amazing Place to Unwind in the Heart of Kailua-Kona”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013

We rented Kona Sugar Shack for our Thanksgiving trip to Big Island. We were a group of 4 families with 2 adults and 2 kids each.

We wanted to stay at a place that was close to the beach, near the attractions, quiet for a family retreat, and was comfortable. Kona Sugar Shack exceeded all our expectations and much more. The property is located right off the beach where we spend most of our time. We were able to enjoy clear sunset and have refreshing breakfast on the large patio - which is commendable given our party size.

The bedrooms were well sized and well maintained (We were expecting small rooms based on our prior experience with cottage and vacation rentals.) The kitchen was nicely stacked and had all possible items that we needed (and what we didn't need :-). The pool and the cabana set-up was a great time to unwind in the middle of the day. We spend most of the day on Thanksgiving at the pool side.

In our week long stay we visited Waikola, Hilo, Volcano, Waipio and Mauna Kea. The only trouble was getting to the major highways. Alii drive is a busy place for morning and evening retreat as the place is close to the main restaurants and bars in the downtown.

Overall the trip was excellent. We were well informed by our host, Jae, before the visit. We never needed any help during our stay as the property had everything we needed.

Wonderful place to stay. Second time staying at the Kona Sugar Shack and would recommend it to anyone visiting Hawaii. Great location for the beach and easy access to shopping and sightseeing. The honeymoon suite has an outdoor kitchen which is wonderful.

I cannot say how much we loved our time at the Sugar Shack. My wife and I shared the Pool Suite with our 2 kids and found it to be a great choice. We loved using the outdoor kitchen and enjoyed relaxing by the pool while the kids swam. We were worried that room might be too small for 4 of us but with such easy acres to outside area we never felt cramped. We also loved having Magic Sands beach right across the street. All in all, this was an amazing place to stay and we would definitely stay there again if we are ever back in Kona.

We were close enough to the farmers market that we could buy fresh fish, fruit and vegetables and get make to the Sugar Shack to grill it for lunch. Views were wonderful. Loved waking up to the sound of crashing waves and song birds. Pool was deep enough to relax but not so deep that I had to tread water. All beach going items provided. Umbrella's,straw mat's, boogie boards, hats, water shoes, coolers, and beach towels.
The couch wasn't too comfortable to sit on for long periods according to the men in our party who watched football as the women lounged at the pool.

Room Tip: Our room was upstairs and on the west side. Great for sunset viewing.

I am just back from a Fall trip to the Kona Sugar Shack. All the stress I had quickly evaporated as soon as I arrived at the Sugar Shack. The beautiful landscaping and views from the pool area and lanai were just what I needed. Each day we were able to explore a different beach, several where we were the only ones on the beach, and then return to the Sugar Shack for a quick swim in the pool and cocktails. Its wonderful having a full kitchen to save on eating out and for the convenience, a big plus if you have young children. We took full advantage of the available snorkel equipment, boogie boards, beach chairs and umbrellas. No need to buy or rent anything because the Sugar Shack has it all. And having a washer/dryer was a big plus. The owners always have good tips on places to go and on this trip told us about the Lava Lava Beach Club north of the airport. Beautiful spot where you can sit in comfortable chairs and be served fantastic food and cocktails. We spent hours there and fully enjoyed the day. We can not wait to return to the Kona Sugar Shack.

What a great place to stay. Beautiful location, and lovely, friendly atmosphere. The place was such a laid-back and well-equipped setup. Excellent for a family.

We cooked outside on the BBQ, swam in the pool, headed over the road to the White Sands Beach and borrowed the snorkel gear for a near-by excursion.

The owners, Jae and John, are so nice and accommodating.

We'd definitely go back. Thanks

My family spent a 10 days at the Sugar Shack. We rented the entire house and had a blast. We rent a lot of vacation homes on our vacations and we have never had a home so well stocked....from foods & spices, needed paper products, to beach gear. The owners Jae & John are wonderful to work with. A hi-light was John working with our teenage boys to bring down a banana tree....we got a box of wonderful bananas to enjoy. The white sands beach is over crowded with locals & the snorkel cove is difficult to get in & out of.....but there are lots of wonderful beaches near by & some great snorkeling too! And Anthony's by the Sea is a nice restaurant in walking distance....I hope we make it back!

Room Tip: Anniversary suite is the best view, kitchen & Lanai! The downstairs suites...Honeymoon & Man...
