Description: Opened in 1998 in the waterfront location adjacent to Huggo's fine dining restaurant, On the Rocks is a come as you are, kau kau (eat) great food with sand between your toes, kick back and enjoy great island entertainment center of fun on Hawaii Island. "After operating Huggo's restaurant for 18 years, we had the opportunity to purchase the vacant lot right next door and we jumped at it," Eric says. "The concept is what you see today - a casual bar and restaurant set literally on the rocks and sand of Kailua-Bay. Like many locals, we were tired of driving 20 miles or more up the coast to enjoy this sort of relaxed resort ambiance and decided to create just that right here in town."

“Great Place for Happy Hour and Watching the Sunset”
Reviewed July 5, 2014

We stumbled on this place, at the southern end of the shopping area on Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona, because it had a nice Happy Hour. The restaurant is located right on the beach/rocks next to the ocean and has a great atmosphere. There was live music both times we went, a hula dancer, and terrific drinks. I do have to say the food wasn't all that great, but the Happy Hour drinks, music and setting were perfect for a Hawaiian experience; just don't expect a lot from the food. I had tacos and nachos on the Happy Hour menu, for $3, and I guess for the price they were good. But the dinner I had (Kalbi ribs) and my guest had were just okay. Still, I'd happily return here because it was exactly what I always hoped for on a Hawaiian vacation, plus the sunset is spectacular. One note: Happy Hour can be crowded, but once Happy Hour ends at 6:00 (order your drinks before it ends) the place is not full.

“Great spot!”
Reviewed July 4, 2014 via mobile

We went right here after the long plane ride to the big island. We got a seat right on the edge and had great service. The fish tacos were mouth watering and the local Kona Brewery beer fresh. Prices were reasonable considering the location. It is not too touristy and a comfortable place to eat. Wear your sandals to sink your feet in the sand under the table.

“Horrible Food But Great Location”
Reviewed July 3, 2014

The restaurant is located right on the water and is a great place to watch the sun set. The had live music and a hula dancer that were good. The service was slow and the waiter got our order wrong twice. I had the sliders and found 3 pieces of bone when chewing, ouch! My husband had the crispy beef tacos and declared this the worst meal he has ever had.

“Breakfast”
Reviewed July 2, 2014

Had breakfast here one morning. Breakfast is run by a different group to those that run Huggo's at dinner. It was lovely to sit with a platter of fruit, croissants and coffee by the ocean and hearing the waves break on the rocks.
