This is a lovely, secluded beach. If you have time it is worth the effort to continue onto Makalawena beach, however if you don't fancy the walk Manini'owali beach is a great place to spend a few hours

Spectacular "secret" Beach in protected Kekaha Kai State Park, complete with paved driveway and restrooms, showers. No shops. Although the semi-urbanization of this natural treasure might put off someone looking for true untouched nature, once you step off the asphalt and down the rocky path to the talcum soft white sand beach and crystal clear blue waters, you are transported to a place that seems as wild and as a distant as a virgin beach in a deserted island. Except that the Four Seasons is 4.4 Miles away.

This beach was the most beautiful beach we went to on the big island. Very strong waves, there were a lot of body surfers here. There is now a paved road to the beach, the turn is right across from the veterans cemetery entrance. Parking could accommodate about 30 cars, but people made their own spots when those ran out. Bathrooms and an outdoor shower, picnic tables. Right next to this beach are some ruins with tide pools that young children were playing in. You will need water shoes in the tide pools, unless you have crazy tough feet like the Hawaiians. There is some shade on this side of the beach, up under the branches of the bushes.

We sat on the black volcano rocks at the top and watched the surfers below riding the waves. The scenery- the contrast of the light blue shore, white sand, and the black rocks, is absolutely gorgeous!

I remember when it was 4 wheel drive and you had the beach all to yourself maybe a sea lion. Not any more road accessible. Path to beach over natural lava steps not for those unsteady on their feet. No shade. No lifeguard. Be smart watch the waves and other swimmers when it's busy a lot of near misses because folks are not being courteous. Wear your sunscreen. Beautiful water pictures can't capture it.
