Unless you like to go out with tons of tourists and kids ... here's an intimate way of exploring the Kona Coasts best snorkeling sites with terrific local guides. We took the South Kona expedition with Captain Liam and Sarah, his assistant. Aside from the fact that you will quickly be on a first name basis with your hosts, you'll also get to know your fellow snorkelers very quickly. The Zodiac-style boats used by Sea Quest hold upwards of 12 passengers including your captain and 1st mate. That's plenty for a wonderful and very personal experience. We saw a huge number of pilot whales who came right up to the boat and entertained us. Spinner dolphins were seen but not harassed by thie highly professional captain and crew. Snorkeling included the most important sites plus a 3rd location by a black sand beach. There, to our amazement were scores of sea turtles feeding. It was a humbling experience to see these fascinating animals. Again, we kept our distance (more than 5 feet away). All snorkeling equipment is provided and a nice deli lunch (turkey/roast beef sandwiches and chips), fresh fruit, bottled water, juices and yest, lots of chocolate covered Mac nuts round out a perfect experience. You will marvel at the landscape as seen from the water (including some exciting sea cave encounters). This is a wonderful experience for anyone experienced or even a 1st time snorkeler. You will have a terrific 5hr. trip and have plenty of photos to show for it. Don't forget to lather up with sunblock before jumping on the boat and be sure you get good directions to the Sea Quest location as it is not all that easy to find at first. You'll have a wonderful time!

My girlfriend and I had the 3 locations snorkel tour and we loved it. We've snorkeled around the world and this was one of the best (even if actual diversity of fishes is generally limited in hawaii waters we did see a lot of them along with turtles and eels). The locations were great and varied, the high point being the captain cook landing. The staff was great and the logistics smooth. They waited for us even if we showed up a couple of minutes late at the rendez-vous point. I can't comment on the quality of the gear they provide since we travel with our own but it seemed adequate with ample choice in size and fit for masks and fins. The craft was in good shape and the lunch provided quite good. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is the price. Again, this is Hawaii so things are expected to cost a little more. I would recommend this to couples and families with teens alike since the locations are generally safe from rip currents and don't require lots of skills in avoiding contact with the reefs while swimming. As a bonus they brought us close to a pod of dolphins on the way in!

Sea Quest uses large inflatable boats to zoom down the coast to a snorkeling spot right in front of the Captain Cook Memorial. They provide juice, water, snacks, snorkels and flippers and instruction if needed for an enjoyable hour or so swimming around a spot that's hard to get to on your own. There were plentiful fish to see and I even met a turtle. The boat ride may not be for everyone as its fast and zips along, bumping over waves...I loved it but one girl aboard was miserable from the outset (I think she'd been talked into coming). The trip back is also fun as you stop at many of the sea case and lava tubes along the way and see whatever wildlife is about. We were lucky enough to have a manta ray come to the surface nearby. The staff look after you and make it an enjoyable afternoon activity.

We love snorkel! It's not always fun, though. A lot depends on the place but even more on people that take you to it. This time we got really lucky. The Captain Tony Roensch and Rich Sanchez were very professional. They started good conversation and made the time on the boat real fun for us, people from Russia, Canada and America. There were many kids and people for who this time was the first experience of even getting in the water. They loved it a lot! Captain Tony made the rafting real fun: he is a really good at riding this raft. He laid our raft to one side, then on another while laying twists on the water. At the same time nobody was scared just excited like on the best attraction. We saw dolphins really close, beautiful fish and sea caves and lava tubes. When we came back after snorkeling fresh fruits, snacks, cookies and cold drinks were waiting for us. Thank you, guys for great experience!
