It is located just past milepost 32 on Palani Road and a real treat and good value for the $50 fee from the Wyndham/WorldMark resort where we stayed. We saw an average of 2 peacocks on every hole (also mating season), wild turkeys on one hole and a number of large birds (forget the local name) of the grouse family. The greens had a few patchy spots and the fairways were a bit thin in places, but a beautiful place to play. Staff was friendly and we even went back a second time with the wives to have lunch and take a spin to see and feed the peacocks as they will take food right out of your hand. We also played Kona Country Club (Oceanside). The senior discount at Kona C.C. kept the price under $100. Both courses absorbed a number of my golf balls. All in all they both were fun to play and added to a wonderful golf vacation (first to HI) on the Big Island.

Got this deal through Wyndham's aloha discount card for $50 including some "rental clubs" for free. Course has very nice Bent grass greens (although slower than you think) and is very playable from white tees. the rental clubs they gave me were several years old and tended to fade without effort. but toe them in and they will work fine. Driving range doesn't open until 9am so bring some balls with you and get loose before you come for early tee time which I recommend. Best weather on this island is from sunup to about 10:30am and then the "vog" moves in and its hazey the rest of the day. Bring your camera as there are peacocks on every hole and many many other interesting birds as well. You might bring some crackers also for this reason. As for the course, most par 5's are birdie capable from white tees. Your ball will fly as many holes are downhill with a big drive. This course is not one of the scenic ones near the beach as it is 1000 to 2000 feet elevation with several elevation changes throughout. But, for a cheap local course with very nice greens and lots of views of birds it cant be beat.

This is a great alternative to the more crowded resort courses (and it's cheaper, too). Located on the "upper road" at a higher elevation, it is often cooler, even misty at times. The course is hilly and great fun -- even for a duffer like me. Great scenery and some wildlife along the way add to the fun. Good "twilight" rates.

My wife and I decided to give Makalei another try. We played there in 2008 and were not really impressed. But some friends played in 2011 and said it was quite nice .The tract has really gone downhill since 2008. The golf carts are in terrible condition, the first hole fairway had just been cut, and it was a clumpy, wet mess. The rest of the fairways were not much better, dried out, lots of bare spots. We play golf regularly in Canada, Japan, and Hawaii, we are not great golfers, but usually shoot in the low 90's. I lost 6 balls at Makalei, and shot 112. So unless you hit the ball VERY straight, you are going to have trouble. There is no rough to speak of, you are either in the fairway or in the bush. I really don't like to diss a golf course, but this place needs to clean up it's act. Oh, and the peacocks, one of the little buggers jumped into the golf cart while we were teeing off and stole my wife's bag of trail mix.

Mountain course with beatiful scenery. Good price and well worth the drive up the mountain to play it.
