Good place to hang out with small kids. The music from the marriott is nice. So is the grass to lay on. Kinda neat to watch the canoes come and go.

The first time we drove through Kona, yuck. Noise, traffic, cruise ship tourists, Bubba Gump shrimp... We decided not to come back. Didn't even look at the pier/bay. Later in our trip, we had to stay at a hotel across from the pier for an overnight to catch our flight the next day. It was Sunday, quieter in town by a factor and seemed to be locals day at the pier. Wow. What a great spot. The little beach area there has GREAT snorkeling, especially good for kids. Shallow and calm but still with a few fun and safe waves for them to roll around in. I walked the wall twice watching a sea turtle and pretty fish of all sorts. Beautiful light and scene late in the day. Wished we had found this spot earlier, but at least we got a jaunt in before we left. We ate at a steakhouse across from it which was decent. Had breakfast at Splashers across the street from this bay, which was v. good. Saw spinner dolphins jumping and playing in the morning. Great people watching. Very relaxing spot. But I am sure when it is super crowded not so great perhaps.

I had been here only 5 minutes at 2 pm on a Monday afternoon before being hit up for money by a begging teenage girl and a presumably homeless dude in a down coat........it's June. If I want to deal with that, I'll stay in Atlanta, Ga. where I run across that all day long midtown. If this is suppose to be a tourist area, it is in serious need of a clean up. If it is a place for the locals and not tourists, my apologies for the intrusion. You can have it! I'm definitely NOT coming back. Yuck!

It is just a pier, no more, no less. But, and this is a big but, it is a great place to watch the sunset, and if you are downtown in the Kona tourist area, you need to walk out on the pier.

We loved to walk along the pier and watch the ocean waves crashing in by the sea wall, and occasionally, getting wet. Many charter boats and cruises leave from there. The outrigger canoes were fun to watch, as well as the swimmers. We could see some interesting fish and crabs. The bay view is beautiful.
The historical sites are always very interesting. Ahuena Heiau is an interesting historical site.
There is a nice, small sandy beach area with a calm swimming area for children, as well as adults.
The area has many restaurants and shops to visit as well.
We strolled and sat there many times, never tiring of the scenery and action.
