The harbor bar overlooks a canal where charter boats pull in and you can see the local catch of the day. A tropical breeze cools the air, and the ambiance is very Hawaiian and laid back.

Great place to have lunch especially after a day on the water. Great burgers and beers. The atmosphere and staff are great.

If you want to dive in Kona this is the Harbor! It is a small harbor but has 4 different launch ramps so the wait to get on with your trip is a short one. There is parking available and a bathroom.

Always one of our favorite places to enjoy a cheeseburger or fish sandwich (fresh from the Kona coast) with a schooner of beer at the Harbor House! Outdoor casual eating perfect after a morning at the beach or boating. Not open after dark.

We rented a boat from the aptly named Kona Boat Rentals, a 21 foot motorboat for the day. We have some limited boating experience (though I do have a boat license from our home state). The folks at Kona Boat Rental were great. They spent time on the boat going over its features and safety equipment, going over the map and location to visit and the process for mooring or anchoring. They also provide free snorkel gear and fishing equipment. We (family with boys 11 and 16) took the boat north in the morning to see if we could find whales and indeed we did. Lots of fun idling and scanning for whales... actually got to shout "Thar she blows." Whales were incredible and at one point a family of three went under our boat and surfaced just in front of us... HUGE!

We had one fishing line out (when cruising, not whale watching) but got no bites...

We motored south but by then the wind had picked up and was blowing from the east so the boat was rocking and rolling. We had hoped to make it to Captain Cook but got tired of fighting the waves. We moored in another bay but this proved tricky as we had to capture an undersea mooring ball while getting battered by the waves and avoiding rocks... got it done on the 2nd try and sustained no injuries but at this point we were enjoying it less and less... did some snorkeling and finally headed back to the harbor around 2 pm or so.

Though tired it was a fantastic day we won't soon forget. Not inexpensive... something like $400 for the day plus the cost of gas... Stopped at the Bite Me fish market and sat out back at the picnic tables for an okay lunch (and much enjoyed beer).
