Owner description: Since the day the Big Island Country Club opened to rave reviews in 1997, it has been on the "must play" list of the golfing visitor to Hawaii's Big Island. That's not only because of its spectacular location and scenic beauty, but equally because of its well-deserved reputation as a course that welcomes both the novice player as well as the low-handicap expert. The course is simultaneously enjoyable yet challenging, and is designed for every level of playing ability. Designed by famed golf course architect Perry Dye, son of Pete Dye, the par 72 course has all the popular attributes and interesting features that make his layouts so popular to golfers of varying skills: wide, gently rolling bermuda grass fairways, medium-size undulating Bent grass greens, and an abundance of water.

Not to be confused with Kona Country Club, the course is a bit of a drive from Kona up a winding two lane road. Opened in 1997, this course obviously had bigger intentions. The clubhouse is a temporary structure quite a distance from the first tee and 18th green giving rise to speculation there is supposed to be a permanent structure by this time. Alas, even the employees grin when the subject is brought up. There will be no clubhouse in the foreseeable future. But the course is still an entertaining venue and can be had for $55 after 12:30 ($65 before). No matter where you book your tee time, even if you are a walkup, these are the fees. The greens are very nice, fairways average, and the rough deep and in need of some attention. My guess is the rough is rarely mowed as a cost saving measure. And there are flocks of goats roaming the property as well as wild turkey as well as the ubiquitous nene, the protected Hawaiian goose. Why they are protected when they seem to be everywhere is beyond me. But they are so do not feed or molest them. Very good value given the rates at other big island golf courses

We play Big Island at least once a week while we are in Hawaii for the winter. The people are friendly and welcoming, the course under the new owner has undergone constant improvement, and it is a pleasure to play. A good variety of holes. As a bonus, the elevation of the course gives it the perfect climate.

This is a little bit of a drive to get to, but not too bad. The staff was great even though they had been experiencing some computer/internet problems. The course itself was a pleasant surprise. We loved the layout and based on this decided to come back here on our last day on the island for another round. The holes were interesting and not bland as some of the resort courses are. We got to see plenty of wild turkey, some sheep, Nene's and even a peacock. We all had a great time here and would love to play this course if we are ever on the island again.

BICC is one of the better courses on the Island, every hole has its own challenge and reward, the staff are great and the cost of golf is reasonable. Stunning views await, you have to play the wind on some days, you never get tired of the holes which can bite you if you are not fully engaged. 17 and 18 are two of the best finishing holes anywhere!!
A must visit on the Big Island golf trail.
