Big Island Country Club

Owner description: Since the day the Big Island Country Club opened to rave reviews in 1997, it has been on the "must play" list of the golfing visitor to Hawaii's Big Island. That's not only because of its spectacular location and scenic beauty, but equally because of its well-deserved reputation as a course that welcomes both the novice player as well as the low-handicap expert. The course is simultaneously enjoyable yet challenging, and is designed for every level of playing ability. Designed by famed golf course architect Perry Dye, son of Pete Dye, the par 72 course has all the popular attributes and interesting features that make his layouts so popular to golfers of varying skills: wide, gently rolling bermuda grass fairways, medium-size undulating Bent grass greens, and an abundance of water.

This has one of the best layouts on the Big Island. The rates are very reasonable, expecially compared to the resort coursed. New owner has invested a great deal of money to make improvements. You have to try this course if visiting the Big Island.

Very informal, yet a wonderful attentive staff. Food is always good, whether it's an omlette or a burger, you won't be disappointed.

“Check it out again if it has been awhile since you have been there”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

I really like this course. Was considering a 5 instead of the 4, but there are a couple others on the big island I would give a 5 to (Mauna Lani - North is one of them)
This course has always had a great layout, but suffered from lack of funds that produced really poor up keep. That change a couple of years ago when the course was purchased by a new owner, and they put some REAL dough into it. They fixed a couple of significant issues (sand in bunkers, dry mud bed across a fairway, etc) and do general maintenance that pushes the value up in a BIG way.
It is a great change from the courses at the beach and offers some nice cool weather. I guess there is more of a chance of rain here, but it the 6-7 times I have played it, the worst I got was a short period of drizzle. Someone else should comment on how much rain. Based on the surrounding terrain, I would say not much.
When you arrive, don't be put off by the temp pro-shop (been there for years). Thankfully the first checks were written for the course and not the club house. They did however but in a new restroom where the first and 10 tee are (and ninth green). If this is how they are going to construct the club house.... WOW!
Views are gorgeous, greens are very true, and the bunkers have beautiful sand.
Be sure to select the correct tee for your ability. You will enjoy it a lot more. A couple of the par 3's are long from the further back tee's and bring a lot of hazards into play. Pick your tee for the day based on the length of these holes (and associated hazards)
BTW - At the time of this writing, I am a 13.7 index (I think golf reviews should always have an indication of the level of play of the reviewer)
