Small protected cove/beach area for people not comfortable in the ocean but also a great place to paddle board for access to some great waves. There is no life guard so watch anyone not experienced in the water. Outside of the cove you are in the ocean so it is recommended that you are an experienced swimmer and surfer.

Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park is located on the west coast of the Big Island, just three miles north of the town of Kailua-Kona, on the ocean side of Highway 19. There is no entrance fee to this beautiful park. There is a small covered outside visitor’s area with a gift shop and very clean restrooms. We chose the perfect day to visit, as locals gather each Thursday to play their ukuleles, guitars, and sing various tunes, including a number of lovely Hawaiian songs.

As we walked the carefully marked trail to the ocean, we encountered lovely birds, breadfruit trees, various colorful flowers, and viewed Petroglyphs left by the original Hawaiian inhabitants of this land. There is another restroom facility closer to the beach. We saw several large green sea turtles, a threatened species, in the shallow waters, some peeking out to take a look at us. It is a beautiful beach to walk and lots of trails to explore.

The beach is very small, but very secluded. The green turtles are usually on the beach sunning themselves. The water is shallow quite a ways out. Reef shoes make wading much more comfortable than bare feet.

It is very interesting to learn about the customs and life style of t he origional settlers in Hawaii. The guides are friendly and well informed. They present activities for every age. There is a nice gift wshop with interesting books and other materials.

We were pleasantly surprised by this park. It was beautiful and uncrowded. We entered by the Marina which is much better than the hot walk from the park center. Make sure you pick up a broshure. It explains what you will be seeing. Just a couple of minutes walk and a beautiful beach stretches in front of you with these rock formations which were fish traps and farms built by the native Hawaiians. Amazing. Walk along the shore and you are sure to see numerous small turtles. We must have seen 20. Take time to follow the path. It is almost mystical. Double back when you get out of the trees towards the visitor center.
