Food is excellent. A popular restaurant at the Four Seasons Kona. We generally had the catch of the day for dinner. Lively, fun.

It's "upscale". We all know what that means. And it is on Hawaii, where everything is expensive. So I expect to pay more here. And I did. Our meals were very good and the location is also very good. The part that I found shocking was what they charged for mixed drinks. Get ready to pay $18 for a Mai Tai and $23 for other mixed cocktails. Geez! I can buy a whole bottle of rum for what they charge for one drink! That's ridiculous! And you can't tell me that alcohol is more expensive on Hawaii than other places, because it's not...I checked.

Imagine sipping ice cold mango mai tais as you lounge comfortably on teak furniture. The warm tropical breeze cooling your skin, you close your eyes and listen to the relaxing sounds of the surf. Open them, look directly out on the ocean past the "beach tree" and bear witness to one of the most beautiful sunsets your mortal eyes will ever see. Take a deep breath and order another drink. Heaven? No. The beach tree bar and grill. Go for a late drink or dinner. As beautiful as it is, there is no air conditioning, so you may find yourself sweltering at high noon. The later in the evening, the better.

Service at the Beach Tree was excellent. While it rained the evening we visited, they did a great job of moving the tables under cover (even though it did get a bit crowded), and there was still an excellent view. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to the surroundings.
We started with a flatbread dish with cheeses and hamakua mushrooms, and it was the highlight of the evening. Absolutely delicious! However, it went downhill from there. My wife had the swordfish, which was decent, but nothing to write home about. I had the pork chop, which was brined in citrus, and really just tasted like a fruity salt lick. It was served with a very boring polenta (perhaps to counteract the saltiness of the pork).
For dessert we had a lemon ricotta tart topped with olive oil ice cream which was actually very good. It was my wife's birthday, so they wrote "Happy Birthday" in English and Hawaiian on the plate, and added some cinnamon sugar pizza dough balls as well, which was a nice touch.
Service and atmosphere were 5 star, but the food brought it down a notch.

We weren't staying at the Four Seasons, but further up the road at Mauna Kea (the beach here isn't as nice) and came down for dinner here. It truly is one of the most wonderful spots for dinner on the beach with the sun setting over the ocean. The food is more casual as is the seating and service. This is not fine dining, but perfect casual dining right on the beach. As the sun set we took some amazing pictures which should give a sense of the surroundings. Would certainly recommend.
