After reading the reviews, we decided to give Kona Brewing a try. We like brewpubs, we like pizza, what could go wrong? As it turned out...everything.
It started with the table. It was a hot day on Kona and we were hoping for a bit of relief from the heat. It turned out that 'inside' at KBC just means hotter and noisier...so we ended up outside. Next to a rocking cocktail party. So we shouted to each other when we needed to talk.
And it continued with the beer. I chose a porter, my wife chose a wheat beer. The porter was pretty bad - it had no body or depth to it at all...it tasted more like a dark ale. My wife was told they were out of the wheat beer...and then waiter just kind of looked at us impatiently...like this was her one chance to order a drink. We went for the first lager we found which turned out to be basically Bud...aka tasteless. While we decided on dinner we did find another wheat beer which the waiter could have suggested...but didn't.
Which was our introduction to the level of service we could expect throughout our meal. Finding out anything about any of the dishes was an imposition. He delivered the wrong appetizer - apparently 'pretzels' sounds like 'pesto' when you're busy. They we had the gall to ask for boxes for our excess pizza. And then to ask for our check. And finally, after sitting at the table for 15 minutes with my credit card on the check trying to get his attention, I take back my card and ask my wife to pay while I go to the bathroom. Apparently, my standing is his cue to swing by and pick up the check...but he refuses to wait long enough for my wife to get her card on the table. Just priceless.
And then the food itself. The pepperoni was OK to poor...but the wild mushroom was abysmal. There couldn't have been an entire mushroom on the pizza - there were more cloves of garlic than slices of mushroom. Both were heavy, greasy, cheesy messes. Just nasty.
