If you travel to Kona you must take the circle island tour offered by Wasabi Tours and
request Nickels as your tour guide. This young man was so knowledgeable of the island from topography, oceanography, flowers & flora to Hawaiian history and folklore. There wasn't one question asked of him that he couldn't answer. Oh, and don't wear sandals. I actually saw a woman in 2 1/2 wedges trying to navigate Volcanos National Park. Just not a good idea.

Nick was AWESOME!!! This is, of course, a long day. But Nick was amazingly informative without being boring, he was friendly (ALL day! that's quite a feat!), and the knew exactly what sites would make the day the best possible experience for everyone. Instead of burning out by visiting every single crater, you see the good ones, the ones to take pictures home to impress your friends. And the non-volcano stops really add to the experience. Rainbow falls is beautiful!

The best indicator of how amazing the day was is the fact that I asked Nick if he would point out a good spot to take pictures of pahoehoe lava, so I could send one to my father back home. He did better than I would have dared ask; he made a quick bonus stop at the best site to see such a flow! Totally made my day, and my father was flattered that even he got a little special treatment.

This was an 11 hour tour that we wished we had done the first day so that we could be oriented to the island. We made a full circle around the entire island. Joe was a great guide and the bus was very comfortable. Lunch was served bento box style in an orchid greenhouse. Perfect. It is a well organized tour and they pick you up at your hotel, which was so nice.

I took 6 people on this tour. There were about 6 other people also on the tour. The van ride was full (thus a little scrunched) and we tended to roll out of the van like sardines but it was not uncomfortable, just tight. The tour was "semi-private" in the sense that we did not have the tour "to ourselves" but neither were we on a "big bus" tour, so it was kind of intimate. The people were polite and considerate of others so it was pleasant company.

The sights were amazing, and the real value of this tour is being driven around to these sights without having to do the driving (or finding the sights) yourself. We really got a full view around the island and I had no complaints about the sights or the time at each location. We saw a ton: Akaka and Rainbow Falls, Kilauea Crater and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach along with the turtles, Waipi'o Valley, an orchid garden, Thurston Lava Tube/cave, etc.

Our guide Joe was fantastic. Joe is a very pleasant and smart guy and knowledgeable of the Big Island and its history, along with much of the history of the larger pacific rim immigration to Hawaii.

I would highly recommend this tour for anyone or family that is seeking a good overview in a one-day tour of the island. Of course there is more to see, but this hits some of the more outstanding highlights in a single (long) day.
