We had heard about Island Lava Java from an many people and noticed it received consistently good reviews on Trip Advisor, so we decided to try it for lunch. We were not disappointed. The waitress was very friendly and made good suggestions. My wife had the Poke wrap and I had the Ono fish sandwich. Both were excellent. Also the ice tea was unique and refreshing. We will definitely return here the next time we are in Kona.

I was looking for a light-ish lunch before hitting the road, and saw all the great reviews on TripAdvisor so headed down (there are lots of restaurants along the same road, but this seemed to stand out - and it did!)

Grab a seat outside and you have a perfect sea view. The staff were great, and - more rare than you'd think - the vegetarian options are fantastic.

They have a range of freshly squeezed juices, and the veggie wrap I had was warm and very filling.

Perfect way to end a stay in Kona.

Expecting lunch to be busy we had made a reservation but no table had been set aside. For a few minutes we played the 'where-are-we-going-to put-them' game. Reviewers noted that you can take your own beer or wine. It's entirely our fault that we didn't realise that meant they don't sell them. The anticipated crisp salad with a glass of cold Pinot Grigio was therefore not in the cards. I ordered the fish tacos with a side of fries, no ketchup. 'Right' she said bringing the fries and slapping down a big bottle of ketchup on the table. The salsa that came with the tacos was in a miniscule tub so I asked if I could have another. 'Right' she said and never brought it. The tacos and the fries were excellent. My wife ordered the Greek salad precisely defined in the menu. She said it was 'very nice' but bore no resemblance to the Greek salads we have eaten all over the world, including Athens. if there is no feta cheese and no olives why not call it something else, we wondered. How about a Kona salad? Knowing things were not going too well, we decided to rescue the situation with a much anticipated dessert and a cup of their renowned coffee. .Unfortunately we were never asked if we would like dessert and no coffee was ever offered. She just appeared with a small saucer containing a paper held down by a stone. 'No rush' she said. It was our bill. At this point we surrendered and left shaking our heads.

This became a frequent place for my husband and I while staying in Kona, the sunsets were amazing and this place has a perfect view while sipping coffee or eating dinner. We had breakfast and dinner there, of course, along with coffee and we didn't have anything that wasn't above our expectations! The staff is friendly and if you are there more than once, they recognize you. We will be going back on our next visit to Kona
