Bring from the mainland and landlocked (Denver), we were looking for a waterfront wave-crashing lunch spot where the locals would go. GREAT calamari as appetizers, on salad, and on a sandwich. A little pricey but still getting a feel for that here compared to the mainland. Definitely recommended!

The Kona Inn remains a special place. The old time "Hawaiian" feeling still exists. We were a party of five, including our 11 year old grandson. It appears that parties with children are placed in a somewhat separate seating area, but lovely none the less. Four of our five meals were excellent and one was okay, but the shrimp were strangely seasoned. The location on the beach can't be topped.

My husband and I paid $35 per plate for lack luster food in taste and appearance. I ordered the Macadamian nut mahi with rice pilaf. The rice had no flavor at all and the fish had a fishy taste and I barely touched it. My husband ordered the stuffed ono in a lobster sauce. Too much sauce with no flavor, much less lobster. The presentation was mediocre at best. I would have sent it back but we were with friends who recommended this place and did not want to offend them. (The next day, our friends shared their disappointment also). The view is wonderful but the restaurant atmosphere is tired and needs to be updated. Overall experience was poor for an over priced dinner. I would never recommend this restaurant for eating.

We went here on our first night on the island and didn't know what to expect but were very pleased at what we found. We were seated next to the grass which was next to the ocean and the breeze kept us very comfortable on a very hot day. We each had the calamari and shrimp and found each to be delicious. We also ordered a split order of ceasar salad which the waiter, Bill, suggested. He also suggested the Longboard beer that is brewed right up the street.

We came here for lunch one day, and dinner on another (though the dinner was just okay because we weren't seated in the restaurant, but at the bar, which had the same cafe menu as the lunch menu, because we didn't have a reservation even though they didn't look that crowded...)

But this review is about lunch we had, which was very good. You can't miss with the clam chowder. The burgers and salads were good. But the one thing that makes this place stand out is the view. The restaurant overlooks the Kona Coast. It's just spectacular. And the wait staff is extremely nice (both at lunch and the bar at dinner).

We always enjoy coming here, and will return, with a reservation, for dinner the next time we're in Kona.
