“Best sushi ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

We love this place! Can't beat the sushi, and they'll do any combination! Definitely a hole-in-the-wall, and wait times are high, but we just plan other things to do while waiting, and it is always worth the wait. The spicy ahi is amazing, and the portions are great for the price!

“Worth searching out.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

Unbelievably large rolls for next to nothing.
Really good ahi, fresh-tasting avocado, and good smoked salmon.
Take-out stand, slow, not very easy to find. But tasty.

“Excellent Sushi & Price, long wait”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2012

The Sushi was excellent and a very good price. We left full and I would highly recommend it if you have the time.
Down side was a very long wait, told 40 minutes but took an hour. We should have gone for a walk and come back at the specified time,
Interesting set up. They take so many orders then post a sign temporarily closed until whatever hour it is that they get caught up. Service is with a frown and you eat outside.
It is located down a one way alley off to the right as you go up the slight incline.
Closed all major holidays and Sunday and when they run out of food (which we did not experience).

“not nearly as nice as we thought”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2012

great name, but very average sushi. they offer a sushi 'pizza' which is sushi plus a big glob of cheese --- yuck. the place is almost impossible to find, even with Google Maps. There are no signs in the litle shopping center where it's located. They close at 645, and they mean it. We were the last to order and while waiting for our food (outside, there are no seats inside) the closed sign went up and the curtains drawn. try somewhere else in town.

“Locals Only”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

I know that Lonely Planet moved in and wrote all about the Big Island for the typical tourist to "explore" Hawai'i. That's why our beaches, restaurants, and neighborhoods that once were "locals only" are now completely overrun with tourists. Look at Kua Bay!!!

That being said, it is our reality now as the people of the Big Island so deal with it. Hayashi's makes excellent Hawaiian-style sushi for local people. If you can't handle the wait and the bored girl at the front, then don't go. Yes, it would be nice if it was faster and the chick was friendlier, but that's part of the Hayashi's experience. Order your roll an hour in advance and take it down to the pier and eat there. This place is an institution of Kona and we should all be happy a small local business is doing so well..... they are a dying breed in Hawai'i.
