Barely noticeable near baggage claim at Kona airport on the Big Island, is this tiny museum honoring Hawai'i's first astronaut, a brilliant young man who perished in the Challenger disaster. In addition to actual uniforms, photos, and documents, gathered here seem to be every kids' book, toy, game, science kit, t-shirt, backpack, pencil, etc. ever designed to pique the interest of aspiring space travelers. Lots of hands-on opportunities and an excellent 10-minute video. Both my 4- and 2- year old grandsons loved it, and so did I!

We travelled back to the airport to see a bit of space history. The white building between the terminals is the one.
The lady wasn't friendly, and they didn't turn on the movie screen. Many attractions weren't working. There were a hundred "games and activities" to do though, as in - store bought games. A 20 month old was kept happy, and a 10 and 11 year old. The adults could read all the notices and see the photos.
Parking was $5 at the terminal for under 1.5 hours, and entry $3 adult and $1 child.
The best part was the astronaut food you could buy and try.

Very knowledgeable staff set up several telescopes to show planets, star clusters and nebulae, depending on what can be seen that night. Also use a laser pointer to give a "star tour" and will patiently answer any questions. They have a microwave and hot water available so you can purchase hot chocolate, ramen noodles, etc. to help combat the chill. Bring warm clothes!

This museum had a wealth of information for the whole family. My children were so well entertained with all the hands-on interactive exhibits. I was able to read all the information I wanted to without the children disrupting me because they were so well occupied with their own interaction. The admission fee is family friendly. We spent well over an hour here looking at everything.

There is so much information here and so inspirational. Ellison Onizuka and other people who have been involved in the NASA programme over the years are such an inspiration. It was great to learn more about Mr Onizuka and his humble beginnings.

Definitely worth a visit. We actually visited during our vacation as we are flying out from Kona airport early morning. If you have a flight scheduled within the opening hours I would recommend arriving early to have a look around.

Otherwise factor it into your vacation. The only downside is that if you are driving you will be slugged with a $5 parking fee.

Go and be inspired!

Small museum at the kona airport. Great activity centers for kids. A ten minute tour for adults. A place of refuge from the humidity of the open air kona airport. Aircon man.
