“Manta Rays are amazing”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

We loved this hotel, whilst it’s a bit away from the Kona main area is beautifully peaceful and has a good sized pool and grounds to make yourself at home. There is a free trolley that you can use to go up to the main centre of town. Every night the Manta Rays come out right in front of the hotel so you can get a great view of them. We ate at Rays on the Bay the food was lovely and it was a great place to watch the sun set over the ocean – the music and atmosphere was also great with live traditional music playing. We had an ocean front suite which has a fantastic view and plenty of space with a great Lanai to have a beer in the later afternoon. The staff were friendly and attentive but not intrusive. The lifts were slightly old so there were a few breaks downs when we stayed but no problem as there are only a few levels of stairs to get to our room. We did order room service one night which took a while to come but the lift was broken and the staff were apologetic about this when the food did arrive. The food itself was nice and fresh and nicely prepared and presented. The hotel has a small store where you can buy all essentials which suited us for our 3 night stay.
Overall this was a very restful and peaceful place to stay after our days of touring volcanoes and snorkelling and a great place to lay our heads down at the end of our busy day….

We stayed here for business, but also had our children along. Clean, very nice pool with two water slides. Good food, great location. The coffee shop sells shave ice for the kiddos for a few hours during the day. Beautiful views, friendly staff.Would definitely recommend.

My wife and I loved this hotel. We have been to Kona four times and this was the greatest place to live. Fantastic view and location with an awesome staff. The rooms are very roomy and clean. Breakfast with fresh fruit, Kona coffe and sitting on the ocean aws great.

This Sheraton resort is south of the town of Kona, about 5 to 7 miles. It's an older project and has not been updated, as to the exterior and grounds for sometime. However, for the internet price of $135 plus taxes, resort fee ($30), etc., it's well worth the stay. There is no beach at the resort and you have to travel a few miles to get to the closest sandy beach, but the views of the ocean and surrounding area is beautiful. The bedrooms are plenty large and very comfortable. The mattress is very comfortable as well as the feather pillows and the double down comforters. The tub/shower is dated, but the small sink area has plenty of room and is finished in granite. There is a great sports/recreation rental and store in the hotel. I did not order and food at the resort but their were a few choices. The two pool areas are dated, but they are large and nice.

Room Tip: You probably want to ask for a view of the ocean room. They put me down the hall, which was fine, b...

Everyone else has commented about the pool, the rooms, the service, the grounds -- all good. A little skimpy on the on-deck waiter service but the bar is really close-by so it didn't matter.

But what I want to write about was the food we had at Rays on the Bay; the hotel had just launched a new menu that was heavily based on local produce and the apps were some of the best we've had period. We ordered 3 apps and 2 pizzas and before the pizzas even came out we ordered more apps based on the quality of what we'd already had. Really lovely food and great service. Also it was really reasonable -- especially for a hotel restaurant.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay here but the overall experience was not the fault of the resort. This area, although beautiful, seems to be still recovering from the recession. Two 18 hole golf courses that border the resort have been closed. The next closest golf course is about a half-hour away. The closest strip mall has about 50% of the storefronts vacant. The hotel itself in a beautiful location, sitting on an ocean cove with a very friendly and helpful staff. It has a beautiful freeform swimming pool with a 150' slide that both kids and adults will love. We enjoyed the onsite restaurant Rays on the Bay where you can look out onto the cove and watch the Manta Rays swimming at night and feed on the plankton.

My wife and I traveled this summer for the first time without our kids and we wanted to do something exceptional so we decided to hit the Big Island on July 15 for 10 days and do it all: volcanos, observatories, manta rays, etc etc. The Sheraton Kona was the ideal place for us to accomplish all these activities and more. The ocean front room was fantastic. Service was terrific. The newly revamped restaurant in the hotel was delicious. We really lucked out as you just never know when you book a place you have never been to. I have always thought that the way to improve the image of the Sheraton brand is to just lose the name. But I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and that Starwood did a great job.

Room Tip: Call and upgrade to an ocean front room for very little cost.
