“Not so bad”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

This hotel is not so bad although it is not the best one I ever stayed during my past trip. It's OK although I don't think it meets the average standard of Sheraton hotels. I booked it by mistake from priceline.com with the "name your own price" option and I cannot cancel the booking even though I realized my mistake in 5 minutes, so I had to stay here for 5 days. I was given a city view room facing the pool, this room is the worst kind of room of this hotel to my understanding.

Free wifi is really slow ( it's not free, as there's a 30 dollar resort fee which covers free wifi).

Room Tip: Ocean view room should be the best rooms, but the price may also double.

The Sheraton is a great mid-level resort choice in Kailua-Kona. Its location is a perfect jump-off to downtown Kailua, for visiting Volcano, doing a variety of snorkeling, or for lounging around its excellent network of connected pools. The rooms have been renovated in the past couple of years, and are clean and kept up. The "resort fee" is reasonable and includes arguably tangible benefits. (bottled water, internet, parking) There are a few foibles here and there; the shower temperature settings are difficult to decipher, certain doors stick, and the secondary staff aren't particularly welcoming. However, overall, this is an excellent location and facility for couples and families at a price that is much lower that high-end resorts.

Room Tip: Partial ocean-view actually had a partial ocean view from inside the room! Yay! (I'm glaring at...

This was a wonderful hotel. The rooms were updated and immaculate. Had an oceanfront room with balcony. the view was awesome The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and well maintained. Pool area huge. Pathways meander along the ocean, however there is no beach. Golf nearby. This hotel is in a quieter area about 2 miles from old Kona town. Good location for our day trips to different areas of the island. There is a small shopping center nearby so that was convenient. About 15 minute drive to airport. everyone was helpful and accommodating. would stay again and would recommend this to anyone going to Kona

Room Tip: oceanfront rooms with balcony are great for relaxing and enjoying the view

We landed in Hilo, the rainy side of the island covered with vegetation. The hotel that we initially booked was not what we expected at all, so we decided to drive the Highway 2000 (Saddle back), an incredible road that connects with Kailua/Kona. While driving, made the reservation to the Sheraton Kona Resort. We got a water front room next to a beautifully manicured lava garden, swimming pool and ocean. It was excellent. Next to the place where you can rent kayaks, hire snorkeling tours, and so on. While there, don't miss the "Rays on the Bay" restaurant bar. Their food and drinks are very good and you get to see the gigantic manta rays at night. Included breakfast was ok, with no variations from day to day, but the restaurant has beautiful, open views to the gardens and the ocean, so is the fully equipped gym. Very good internet service all over the property.

We stayed for 4 nights at this very nice resort on a beautiful property with perfectly manicured gardens. Our room was quite large, though sparsely furnished. While the furnishings were typical in age/style for a standard hotel, it's worth noting that the bed was ridiculously comfortable!! There's no beach access (just black lava cliffs), but the pool is great. It's very large and meanders through the center of the resort, and includes a waterfall that seemed to be a big highlight for the many kids there. There's also a sizeable waterslide that has a couple of twists and turns on the way down. The resort has a number of restaurants, which seemed to be open at different hours from each other. The coffee stand is open during the morning and serves a very good cup of 100% Kona coffee. One of the large restaurants had a breakfast buffet each morning, which had a lot of variety with good food (especially the coconut syrup!), but it didn't quite seem worth the $23 pricetag per person. Though having a cup of bottomless Kona coffee while enjoying the morning breeze in the open-air seating almost got it there. The hotel's dinner restaurant (Rays on the Bay) was very good and surprisingly not too over priced for being attached to a resort ($28 for the fish of the day with steamed vegetables and coconut rice). It had an interesting selection of house cocktails, and I highly recommend the over-sized warm macadamia nut cookie with Kona coffee ice cream for dessert! After sunset, it's possible to watch Manta Rays in the bay from the restaurant, or you can stop by the adjacent viewing platform. The rays were there each night we stopped by (thought he best viewing is after the snorkeling boats have left). Overall, we were highly satisfied with our stay, and would definitely recommend this resort to anyone looking for a moderately priced place to stay in Kona -- though if you're looking for easy beach access (i.e., you don't want to have to drive to a sandy beach) you may want to look elsewhere.

Late review: July 2012 . This was a very nice place near Kona and right on the water. The decor of the room was modern and attractive but very comfortable. My husband appreciated the flat screen tv. The restaurant and multiple hops were very convenient. An open air mall with hula demonstrations less than a mile away and the manta ray night dives just up the street. Staff was very attentive and helpful.

This old box has been well maintained, has a nice pool, a nice staff etc. that said, it feels, like just another Hawaiian resort from the seventies which ran out of laes, with grass growing through the tennis court, small bathrooms etc

Room Tip: Lower floor rooms have very high ceilings and are pretty nice
