On first sight I was disappointed with the hotel but the smiles at reception and pool area, views and rays by the bay , made up for it. The grounds and communal areas are beautiful although the rooms are adequate . Spending time in our rooms weren't a priority to us and so the hotel suited is perfectly. Great trolley bus to the town, yoga lessons in the morning and a good 24hr gym. Added bonus was the Hawaii marathon finished at the hotel during our stay which luckily we hadn't entered.

Room Tip: The gardens are lovely to look at

We stayed 3 nights, 26-28 May 2013. We had a late dinner the first night at Rays on the Bay, and watched the manta rays during the relaxing meal. Our Ocean View room on the fourth floor was good size, clean and quiet. The view was mainly of the palm trees, grounds and tennis court with the ocean way in the distance. It was a bit of a walk to get to the breakfast area, but not too bad. We both enjoyed the open air breakfast area. There was a good variety available, with fresh fruits and made to order omelets. The salesman at The Flying Fish was very helpful on providing ideas for snorkeling and places to visit, even though we didn’t buy any tours from him. We’re not ones to sit around and soak up the sun, and we found this to be a good location for exploring the immediate area (we had a rental car). We visited the Kona Coffee Living History Farm, the Painted Church, Puʻuhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park, and Kailua Kona. The Captain Cook Monument is not practically accessible by land, but is near the resort. We strolled through the Ho`oulu Community Farmers Market on Wednesday, and bought a few goodies. Overall, it was a very pleasant stay.

This hotel is an enormous block which does not somehow fit in with the glorious surroundings. The rooms and hotel facilities are high class and the location is good. There is no beach for swimming but the hotel has a nice pool complete with a water fall. The gym is minimal. The restaurant is good but expensive and a car would be needed to go anywhere else to eat and there was no shuttle bus. The bar area is good with live music and an area for watching manta rays in the evening. Overall a high class modern hotel with excellent rooms and good views down the coast.

We stayed with our friends in 2 sea view rooms for 3 nights. Great place to stay a bit old in places but clean & well looked after. We had breakfast each morning we were here it is buffet style but it sure sets you up for the day. 2 evenings we sat at the bar watching the rays swim right upto the breakers at the foot of the bar fantastic to see. We also used the bar near the reception where you had great views across the bay into the hillside all around & a great place to people watch. If we were back on the big island I would stay here again in a hart beat.

Room Tip: Our sea room was fine just a bit obstructed by the big tree in front of our balcony

My partner and I were visiting as part of our 25th wedding anniversary. We chose not to hire a car. The cab fare from the airport costs around $55. Queuing at check in was more like cattle herding or a line up at the bank - not a nice way to start the our stay. We waited about 10 minutes.

Things did get better after that. We had lunch around the pool which was went well. Also had cocktails and dinner at Rays which was all good. Watching the Mantas off the restaurant balcony was amazing. So much so that we did the night snorkel with the mantas which we would count of one of the top things to do in life. Simply incredible.

Given its proximity to the manta location the hotel could do more to facilitate the manta ray experience. We needed to walk/get the trolley bus to the local shopping centre (about 20 minutes walk away) to begin our tour then we needed to walk back to the harbour. It would have been helpful if one or more of the tours would pick up from the hotel.

As other reviewers have said the hotel buildings are old and tired. The pool isn't something that we thought was good. We had a garden view room which was large and had a pleasant enough outlook - once you stood up and could see over the high balcony wall. The showers were low pressure over bath things with a shower curtain. Not pleasant.

I'm not convinced that we had good value for our money.

I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. Amazing.

Great location, nice restaurant and bar right at the sea - at night watch mantas swimming there, good gym facilities, friendly staff, great pool area, rooms are big and very very clean.

To summarize: you have to visit this hotel. I will definitely return :-)!

This was a very nice resort and we had an ocean view room. Even though it would be more expensive, I would have booked an oceanfront room instead.

The hotel is very nice and the grounds, pools and hot tubs are very well maintained and beautiful. I had imagined that there was a beach right at the hotels - especially since the Manta ray viewing is done a few hundred meters off shore. However, the topography dictates that there really is no sand and one cannot just walk into the ocean. That does not detract from the resort.

One thing to be aware of-- the resort is situated by itself. The town of Kailua Kona is about 6 or so miles away and a taxi there would be expensive. (We had a car). Parking in Kailua is not the most readily available I have ever seen. There is a trolley to town that runs on a regular schedule but it takes almost an hour each way. The trolley is included in the resort fee (add $31.50/rm/night for the fee). The airport is about 45 minutes north of the Sheraton and there is a strip-type of mall about three miles away.

We ate at the restaurant in the hotel ("Ray's on the Bay") and the food was pretty good and reasonably priced by hotel standards in general and Hawaii in particular. The view from the oceanfront tables at sunset is absolutely stunning.

We had a very nice stay there last week but think I would have preferred to say in Kailua-Kona if I ever go back to that part of the world.

Room Tip: Book an oceanfront rather than an ocean view. Many, if not all, the ocean view rooms are in Wing 4 w...
