“Hotel is nice, but the rooms need updating.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2012

Synopsis: Hotel is nice, staff is good, pool is beautiful, Rays is great!, but the rooms leave a lot to be desired.

We stayed at Waikoloa for our first 7 days and finished up our stay at the Sheraton Kona. When we pulled up we were highly impressed with the exterior of the lobby. The bellman was very helpful and courteous. As we made our way in, it was very obvious that the lobby was recently remodeled, the design was gorgeous and the view was stunning. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. But that excitement was short-lived as we entered our room.

The lobby does not resemble the room. Don't get me wrong the room was decent but the expectation is higher after leaving the lobby. Our biggest disappointment came when we opened the door to the bathroom. It was rather depressing! It felt more like a public restroom than a bathroom in a resort room. The tub was vastly outdated, it appeared as though instead of putting new tile they just covered the caulk lines with a different caulk, using their fingers I might add. Every time my wife or I would exit the bathroom we would just frown in disappointment. So if you enjoy that away from home updated beautiful resort bathroom, this is not the place for it. When it was all said and done my wife and I consciously said to ourselves "we are only resting and bathing in this room, not living in it.". This kind of helped us deal with it. If we were staying more than 2 nights we would've needed to change resorts tho.

On a positive note: The pool is beautiful, Rays is delicious, & the staff is very good. Eating at Rays, enjoying their excellent food, and watching the Manta Rays is something I would suggest everyone should do even if they aren't staying at the Sheraton Kona.

Aloha. It's disappointing that your accommodations were not as anticipated but your feedback is greatly appreciated as are your compliments for our staff and lobby. We are glad that despite your lack of enthusiasm for your room, you still enjoyed our pools and dining at Rays on the Bay. We do hope that you will return again as it would be our pleasure to welcome you back. Mahalo.

The new manta bar is cool. The rooms though are noisy, lots of kids, lots of noise, we had a mountain view room so underwhelmed, sound really carries here. Food is ok, but expensive, the room don't appear to have been updated in a long time. The price however is excellent, so we were prepared to take the compromises. Love Hawaii, if trying to do the trip on a budget, the Sheraton if fine.

We arrived three days after their grand re-opening. The lobby and common areas are great, very well done. The pool is also fantastic. It is very large with several distinctive areas. It has a waterslide, waterfalls, and a separate shallow area that is gravel bottom. I assume to mimic a more natural beach area. The grounds are beautiful. The hotel is situated on small bluff of lava right on the edge of the ocean. The flowering bushes, plants and trees are fantastic. I must really give kudos to their landscape architect.

The hotel has several restaurants. We ate at the poolside restaurant which was good, but never made it to the others. Although we did hear good things about “Rays”.

They also have a manta ray viewing area. Where at night they shine lights into the ocean, which attracts plankton. The manta rays then come and feed on the plankton and you can see them from the observation area – very cool.

Service was decent, nothing notably good or bad

The rooms are okay.
The furniture has some age but everything is functional and clean. You can certainly tell they spend their remodeling money on the common areas, pool, and restaurants, and not the individual rooms.

The bathrooms remind of something you would see in a greyhound bus station. I cannot believe they did not upgrade these in the recent remodel. They were very clean but very, very old. The fixtures were commercial style, such as in a public restroom and ours was quite finicky. You had to pull the lever upwards or to the rear to get it to flush.

They offer some complimentary services according to their little card that is included with your magnetic key cards. These complimentary items include self-parking (for $7 a day) internet service, unlimited local calls, 30 minutes of long distance, two small bottles of water daily, yoga classes every other day, and lei making lessons on certain days.
All these complimentary services only cost you $20 a day and is billed as a resort fee.
Oh, you don’t need these complimentary services, that’s okay, you can forgo them for $20 a day.

I would stay here again because of the pool, the grounds and the view, but would be sure to figure in the resort fees into my budget.

This is one of several reviews I have written after our two week trip to Hawaii
I have also posted reviews on the following:
Hotels: Outrigger on the beach = Waikiki, Shertaon Keahou on Hawaii, and the Westin on Maui
Restaurants: Ted’s Bakery on O’ahu, Fabiani’s on Maui, Beach Bums Grille on Maui
Attractions/Excursions: Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head on O’ahu, Mauna Kea, Black Sand Beach, Kilauea, Manta Ray night dive, and snorkeling with the Dolphins on Hawaii. Maui Dreams Dive charter, Extended Horizons Dive charter and Maui Sunriders.

We stayed one week in the hotel because of an convention! The hotel is very nice, front clerk very polite and the rooms are very comfortable. Even after we made the checkout they let us stay in the hotel and use all the facilities, like the pool, towels.. The rooms were very clean and with a lot of space! They also offer a package for $20/day that you can park, have unlimited trolley rides to downtown and wireless in your room. Breakfast and dinner are very expensive. I suggest that you go to the Keahou Shopping Center (one mile from the hotel) and have your meals there. At night you can see manta ray on the rocks. We definitely would stay here again !!!

Room Tip: Stay in front of parking lot (it's cheaper and less noisy).

Even though I have been to all islands in Hawaii numerous times and stayed in many comparable upscale hotels, this short two nights stay at Sheraton Keauhou Bay definitely was one of the very top Hawaii experiences I have had. We had an ocean view room with ~150 degree view of the ocean, the pool and the big, fun water slide. The room is adequate, if not fancy. But fancy rooms can not be the reason for me to fly a long way to there. What I think is wonderful about this Sheraton is the setting and the total experience. It's closer to Volcano NP than most other resorts. Not only they present a great way to view the Manta Rays every night right from the hotel, there is also very informative complementary Manta Talk right at the spot most nights. It's also close to various spots I snorkeled and swam with the big Sea Turtles. It offered a list of complimentary programs every day. Most noteworthy ones are the hike to the historic site of the last battle to get the first hand understanding of its impact on Hawaii and the cultural walk of Keauhou Bay to learn the history of historic sites right on the property. Thanks to Lily, not only I was surprised to learn ALOHA is actually an acronym and what it stands for, I now have much better understanding of Hawaii history and culture. Mahalo!

Checked in for a one night stay. We booked via Priceline and got the room for a lot less than their published rates. Upon our early afternoon arrival, we waited in line for about five minutes and was greeted. We had a few questions about the resort which were answered thoroughly and quite helpful. We are SPG Gold Members and although we don't get credit for the stay, we do get the benefits this level of membership brings (ie. late check-out, free drinks or resort fee waive among other things). Once we got our keys, we got lei'd. Whoop!

We checked into a partial ocean-view room. It was clean and well kept, except for the in-room refrigerator. When we opened it, there was this brown sludge at the bottom of the unit. We called guest services and within five minutes, house-keeping was at our door ready to clean and sanitize the refrigerator. Awesome!

We visited their newly renovated bar "Rays on the Bay" to view the Manta Rays feed on the plankton revealed by the spotlight from the bar. Although we only saw one Manta Ray feeding, it was spectacular. Also, the their mango martini and guava lemonade drinks were a GREAT recommendation from our waitress. The bar had a live two-man band who performed quite well. I would totally buy music from this artist if I can only remember who he was...

The rooms are quiet and didn't hear a peep from any one of our neighbors. I did notice that I could hear foot traffic from the hallway, but nothing too bothersome. Anyway, it was a great hotel for the price although I would be hard pressed to stay here at normal published rates... Regardless, I would consider staying here again.

Our stay at this resort was wonderful. We had a spacious room with a partial ocean view (which was more than we expected). The bathroom was quite dated though. The swimming pool was great and so were the staff. The staff booking activities were especially very helpful. The on-site restaurant was a disappointment however. We arrived for dinner on Sunday night only to be told all the tables were booked (most of them were empty and continued to be empty throughout the night). We ordered a pizza and burger, both arrived cold and the burger was under cooked. Staff rectified this immediately yet it's something we haven't forgotten. We recommend you head out for dinner to a nearby restaurant called Huggo's - I couldn't recommend it enough!

Room Tip: Chose a partial ocean view room - you'll be surprised how much of the ocean you can see! (not to...
