Koa Wood Hale - Patey's Place Hostel

“More than pleased”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2012

Compared to some of the bland hostels I stayed at, this place was an oasis. They decorated most of the property with Rasta and Hawaiian art, made clever signs, and did thir best to make the place cozy. I've stayed here three different times, and now that Zero is gone, I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else while in Kona.
No air conditioning, the beds are not comfortable, but the floors were clean, the staff friendly, and the vibe was nice.
Kona is an expensive place to stay, an this is the only deal in town.

Really disappointed with this place. Not clean, cockroaches in the room, the bathroom and walking around the shower. Mold everywhere in bathroom. No net in the windows, letting the bugs in at night. Stains on the room carpet. Everything looked pretty dirty and old. Staff was ok, giving us directions and all for the things around town. Some guy was watching tv all day and all night, not really welcoming...! Would not recommand staying there at all!!

We were on a budget round trip of the Big Island and I can only recommend not to stay in Kona unless you really have to! If you choose to do so, spend a bit more and get a decend hotel room but DO NOT select this dump!!
We stayed in a dorm with no carpet, just plain concrete floor. They make you take off your shoes outside, which would not be a problem if the floor all over the hostel wouldn´t be dirty... the living room was blocked by a guy sleeping in front of the TV all day... we didn´t even look at the kitchen but it seemed pretty dirty... the shower had snails in it, pretty disgusting! The overall appearance of the place is not good, and we have stayed in a lot of hostels all over the world... caring staff and a complete makeover of this hostel needed ASAP!!!

this hostel wasn’t what we expected, we arrived they didn’t explain anything about the hostel & there 100’s of rules, they just took us to the private dorm room and that was it! There was 2 seperate rooms with shared bathroom and kitchen... we had the place to ourselves due to no one been in the other room, well thats what we thought, the staff would come in as they please, no knocking, just walk right in to use the bathroom & kitchen facilities, we didn’t appreciate it at all, not when we were sat in the room and they just walk straight in and say nothing. The kitchen draws and cupboards were dirty and ants were all over the kitchen when we arrived. Not in our top 50 hostels any way n we were on a round the world trip and stayed in £2 accommodation in Thailand better than here!

I personally felt that this hostel wasn't up to scratch. The carpet in our downstairs room had stains, the sheets were thin and old and bunk beds noisey. We weren't provided with a key to our 4 bed dorm so our things didn't feel secure when we left for the day. The area the hostel is in wasn't one I would choose to stay in again (however it was close to the water) and service was below average.

Room Tip: Maybe upstairs was better?

Just looking for a reasonably priced place in expensive Kona area to casually store stuff while exploring and packing up to leave. The semi-private rooms on second floor provided great access to bath/kitchen/tv amenities without having to share with many random people. I could lock my bedroom door and leave my things behind as needed, without being too far from the Kona waterfront- although it is a few blocks walk.

Free parking provided, and free wi-fi, as well as free bookcase of reading material.
Did not end up socializing with any other occupants except my suite-mates, who were not disruptive.

Staff was pretty casual but nice. My bed was initially not made up, but that was immediately rectified and I was given a towel to use. No A/C but even with door closed all day for privacy, it was easy to cool off the room using the ceiling fan, open screened windows, and fan in the living room to provide cross breeze. Bathroom light must have been broken but substitute lamp did fine. Not a 5-star accommodation, but also doesn't cost as much! This place was almost 1/2 what I was charged at a cheap hotel on the Kona strip, which was old and noisy.

Room Tip: Semi-private rooms share bath and kitchen with another room.

I think the headline says a lot already but I will tell you a few more details:
- the room I'm staying in has old carpet with a lot a stains, the room next to us doesn't even
have carpet, you walk on concrete
- the shower is moldy
- in the bathroom ceiling is a big hole, also in the wall
- cockroaches are running around, inside and outside
- the stove in the kitchen and the water kettle is rusty
- I looked for a spoon to eat my oatmeal and the only spoon I could find was a plastic spoon
- and I don't think they do serious cleaning
