“A place to relax even for a family with small children”
Reviewed September 25, 2004

It was my fifth time on the Big island, and by far the best stay. It was even better than my stay at the North Shore on Oahu the previous year. Totally relaxing, away from the hustle and bustle of the city with great view of the sunset. The unit where I stayed was close to the main entrance, so the sound of cars going out of the complex in the morning was a little loud, but I am sure that the other units do not have this problem. I have two small kids and they were running around the living room, which seem to shake a little (I felt it lying on the couch) which made me worried that the unit below may hear my kids running. The unit above seemed to be empty, so I did not hear anything myself, but if it was occupied, we probably would of heard foot steps. Also, the water pressure from the showers seemed a little low. Other than that, it was a perfect stay for a family who needs to get away from it all, and at the same time the Keauhou shopping center just minutes away makes it convenient to shop for groceries or to have an inexpensive night out. I'd recommend this to my friends and family.

p.s. Bugs... you can't do away with bugs in Hawaii. I got a few bites too, but they wont kill you.

We stayed in a phase 1 2nd floor unit near the upper swimming pool. The apartment was spacious with high ceilings. The living room and master bedroom were large with access to a nice balcony. The second bedroom was smaller, but still nice with large closets. The kitchen was large and well equipped. Our accomodations were really exceptional. No complaints whatsoever. I can see that if you had a lower level unit, it might be dark, so request an upper level unit. We got there on the early side and they allowed us to choose the unit that we wanted to occupy.

We rented snorkelling equipment for a reasonable cost from the main pool equipment rental for the week and snorkelled at the nearby beach park. There is a shopping center within walking distance with a grocery store, movie theaters and restaurants. It's worth it to do the timeshare presentation so that you can get discounts on island activities. If you are travelling with children/teenagers, this might not be the best island for you as you have to drive to all of the best beaches and it's not as lively as Maui. If you go to the Volcanoes Park at night make sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and have strong flashlights (one each!) it's perilous walking and really, really dark on the lava.

We were at the Kona Coast Resort for a week starting August 13. Our unit was in the newer section and we were fortunate enough to have a view of the ocean and the golf course. Also, we were very close to the main pool, fitness center and activities center. After reading previous reviews I was a little concerned about the room, but there were no problems. They are beginning to show their age, but everything works and there was plenty of room. A couple of recommendations: go to the timeshare presentation and get the diamond card for discounts on numerous activities; and purchase "Hawaii the Big Island Revealed" by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. The timeshare presentation is painless and they will show how they plan to re-model the units in the next couple of years. The book is invaluable in planning your various trips. Great maps and information to consider before you go on your adventures. My thoughts on the trip...The shopping center just above the resort has a good grocery and drug store. Rocky's pizza is good for a quick meal. If you're a runner like me then Alii is a great place to run. It has some hills and can be hot and humid, but wide shoulders and lots of runners and walkers out every day. The trip to Volcano's National Park was worth the long drive...if you want to see lava flows in the evening at the end of Chain of Craters road then get there about an hour before sunset due to the crowds. The Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour of the Kohala coast was spectacular. If you want to explore the various beaches around the island then get a four wheel drive or you will walk many miles like we did in the hot sun. The green beach near South Point was great. The Pololu Lookout was spectacular, but it is a tough hike to get to the bottom. The Greenwell coffee tour was interesting. The luau at the Royal Kona resort was entertaining. Golf at the Kona Country Club was worth the price. The sunsets on the golf course near the main pool are spectacular. The drawbacks are traffic in the Kona area during the week. Alii, Hwy 11 and Hwy 19 all are congested and it's really bad on 19 in the afternoons south of the airport. Another drawback is the walking in hot and humid weather to see the really interesting sites. Without a four wheel drive you need to have lots of water or gatorade to drink. Overall a great trip and I highly recommend the Kona Coast Resort.
