We decided to do the night time snorkel with Manta rays at the behest of my 11 year old son. We checked out a few suppliers and chose Splashers after reading other reviews. We could only go on the same day we wanted to book and they only had space for our group on their late departure at 8:30pm. Our trip was only the 10th time they had done the late trip, but they assured us it was better because all the other outfits would have left by then and we would get the cove to ourselves. This is one time when the promises of a trip supplier really came true! Mike and his team took great care of us, with Capt. Cyrus and Beth taking us out on their fast zodiac. The last of the other boats were leaving just as we arrived and we had the entire cove and all the Mantas to ourselves! The way it works is that you're in a wet suit with snorkel gear on. They have a surf board that's been outfitted with plastic bars along the edge and bright lights that shine down through the board into the water. You get into the water and hold onto the plastic bars while floating horizontally. Then you wait for the bright lights to attract the plankton to the board, and the Mantas to come eat the plankton. I gasped as I was floating there in the dark water with a column of light shining down and the first Manta glided into view below. They are enormous and majestic! The Mantas started doing loops below us, swooping upwards towards the surface, mouths agape scooping up plankton. On each loop, they seemed to get closer and eventually, they loop around only 2-3 inches away from you. Really out of this world! The Splashers crew were all friendly, professional and took good care of their customers. Highly recommended if you're in Kona.
