“Great food Great value”
Reviewed September 4, 2012 via mobile

Really good Island food at reasonable prices. In Kailua Kona one of the two best places to eat. Great smells from the baked goods greet you as you enter and tempt you as you choose from many good choices.

“Great breakfasts and treats too.”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

I love this bakery. Not only do they have great fresh bread sales, they make great sandwiches and breakfast. I alwasy tell travelers to not overlook this little place. Try my favorite the fresh mango scones or banana bread- or the famous cinnamon buns! The food is great and it is a value in Kona.

“Fake bakery”
Reviewed August 19, 2012

They sell breakfast sandwiches using Costco croissants but have nerve to display them as if they were cooked in house, anyone who shops at Costco will notice. Leaves me to wonder what else they fake. We did buy a cake ther as my sons birthday was during our vacation it was actually light and yummy but again it was probably not authentic because their big cake display sign show many options bu when you order they only offer two types. It's a good spot not to get burned by the garbage on Alii drive but it is nothing special. Take the advice from others there are no good restaruants in Kona. From Thai to pizza it is all bad especially the spots on Alii drive (main shopping strip). Hate to say it because we don't usually eat it but fast food places like McDonald's are your safest bets or going to Costco and buying stuff, the beef is local if you have the ability to grill you will have the best steak you've ever had.

“Awesome Breakfast”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

You KNOW you are in Hilo when you have Kalua Pig breakfast sandwich on a croissant. What a fantastic treat!
Great place for breakfast or lunch and good coffee - their breads and pastries look good too. The only thing they were lacking were desserts with chocolate...

One day we arrived about 1/2 hour before closing, craving some coffee. They didn't have any ready, so they made us cafe americanos and charged us for plain old brewed coffee - great!
Another great local place to visit - away from the tourists and a very good value. Since they are serving locals/regulars, they don't overcharge for mediocre food.

“It's all about the coffee in Kona, but the rest is good too!”
Reviewed July 1, 2012

Every Big Island town sports at least one dive that claims they offer the best coffee. The coffee here is very good, even by the lofty standards of West Hawaii. And Buns in the Sun is not even a dive - not really. The tables are pleasant. The bakery items are pretty darn good as well. You may have to crumb your table yourself. But the kitchen is spic and span. Cm'on, Kona is the funkiest town this side of Hilo. If you're a first time visitor to Hawaii, and you landed at Keahiole airport two hours ago, and you still have your mainland traveling suit on, don't come here first. You won't have aborbed the proper island spirit for at least a day. Put on your flip flops and your oldest pair of shorts. Then remember, at Buns in the Sun, "You're never fully dressed without a smile."
