Its a long day if you do the valcano tour! 12 hrs folks so you will be dead tired at the end of the day. If you have young kids...Think twice. Best advice? Take your camera!!!!
My daughter was 10 & it got a bit much. Worth it but, grumpy!!! Bring a jacket & hiking shoes! The lava field is just that & has hot spots.
And taking The Saddle? Car sickness happens to the best of us,lol. Its getting more expensive this yrear too,so maybe look around? Oh & we saw NO lava. Was a huge bummer!!! We loved the experience thoroughly & got to see the island. But for the price next time we might just rent a Jeep & go explore on our own. Aloha.

We have been wanting to do this for the 22 years we've been coming to the Big Island, but never did. This year we decided to. Several sources (including a local) told us this company was the best one to take this tour with.

This is a 10-hour tour, which includes a hot meal halfway up the mountain, loads of info about the volcano and Hawaiian history, spectacular sunset above the clouds, then star gazing through a big telescope.

We were very impressed with the level of organization this tour company has in place. They are prepared for all situations, are careful to make sure everyone is acclimated to the high altitude, provide jackets and gloves, and the guides are very informed and personable.

The price is very reasonable: $200 if you pay full fare. The activity cards you can get at your timeshare will get you $50 off the ticket price.

For the trip details, you can refer to this link: http://www.hawaii-forest.com/index.php/tours/twilight_volcano, I will not repeat here, as it is well described.

Why I like it:
1. The natural scenery
This is an experience, it is a true statement that "you will not get as much, if you do this on your own", as many sites requires the knowledge and familiarity of the natural life.

2. Our tour guide: Aleson
She is a pleasure to have on the trip. She is knowledgable, enthusiastic, and very attentive.
The tour lasted over 13 hours, yes, longer than it was forecasted, as she wanted us to experience the most that we could during the tour. As the weather on that particular day was not the most corporative, Aleson allowed us to stay on a little longer, as the sky was breaking out eventually to see the spectacular glow from the lava lake. She is just wonderful

3. Well prepared and thoughtful tour
This includes the rain gear provided, just in case -- which was indeed needed; heavier jacket for the cool evening -- which was necessary; and the meals prepared, both lunch and dinner. All in all, everything is pre-arranged and well thought through

I can go on and on, but you get the picture. If you are lucky enough to visit big island and in Kona, book this trip, you will be impressed.

Highly recommended.

My wife and I took a tour of volcano national park with this company and had a very exciting experience.

The tour included the opportunity to view the eruptions from the Kilauea cauldron in the evening that provided a spectacular red glow from the lava lake beneath the surface.

Mark was our guide and did an excellent job running the 12 hour tour. He had excellent knowledge of volcanos - the subject of this tour - and tailored the tour to meet the needs of tourists on his tour.

The highlight was definitely witnessing the Kilauea evening eruptions. However, the tours of lava fields of recent year eruptions, walking thru the lava tube in a dense rain forest and viewing the lava flow along a seaside cliff were special sites that make a lasting impression on the sheer force from past lava flows and their impact on the island of Hawaii.

My husband & I did the Twilight Volcano Adventure Tour with Justin. Right from the time we first met Justin at the office before the tour to when he dropped us back at the office approx.12hrs later he was always pleasant, easy to talk to,helpful. He looked after each & everyone of the people on the tour. Very knowledgable. We had a great mix of people on the bus. No whingers or whiners - thank goodness. The food & drinks provided were very nice. Alot of items were on hand if we needed them eg. walking sticks, small backpacks etc and Justin always asked if we wanted anything. Very happy with Hawaii Forest & Trail. If Justin is anything to go by then the other staff will be just as good as H F & T must be very picky with who they employ as tour guides. It was the small things like hot chocolate + blanket for the 90min or so trip back to Kona at the end of a fantastic day/night that just made it all worth it. Next trip to the Big Island would use H F & T again.
