My husband and I had a wonderful experience hiking and swimming in the waterfalls. Our guide was Chris. He made the trip very enjoyable. He was extremely knowledgable and very professional. Great experience!

First, if you are going to visit Kilauea you must go to the Jaggar Overlook after dark. It does not compare to the experience durring the day. Second, if you want to get of the beaten path and learn about the volcanoes, the island, the ecosystems, and the culture from a fantastic guide, book with Hawaii Forest & Trail. The group was small and intimate. The guide was passionate and knowledgable. This is a great way to see Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

We had John as the guide. He made the trip fun and taught us a lot. Seeing the sunset was great but the stargazing was amazing. It is so dark on Mauna Kea that stars jumped out from everywhere!

We booked the Mauna Kea Summit and Stars Adventure through Hawaii Forest and Trail on suggestion of the Hawaii Revealed book, and were so happy that we did!. We met at their headquarters, left there about 2:30pm, returning at 10:30pm. John was our guide, and was very personable and knowledgeable. He had us all introduce ourselves and encouraged us to interact. He never stopped talking the entire trip up the mountain (except for questions). He was very knowledgeable about the topography: the lava fields, the ranchlands, military fields, dryforest, and rainforest, animals, birds (even stopped to let us photograph the sheep, goats, and a Hawaiian goose...Nene...the state bird.) as well as some culture and history of the island.

We stopped for a boxed dinner and hot beverages at an interesting old sheep-shearing station... under a tent. We were at about 7000 feet.......so beginning to acclimate to the altitude. Then we proceeded up the mountain and arrived at the top (@13,790 feet) just before sunset. He gave us information about the observatories, and provided jackets and gloves as we exited the van to watch the sunset... as it was very cold!! The sunset was amazing!!. After sunset, we drove about 2000 feet down the mountain, where he stopped.(If we would have gone all the way down to the visitor center, the clouds would have been a detterent to seeing all the stars. After brownies and hot chocolate, he led a stargazing session. Wow.......his knowledge of astronomy was incredibly amazing. There was no moon, so the number of stars was incredible. Even got to see an asteroid (?) travel a long distance across the sky. He pointed things out with his laser and let us look through his telescope at constellations.

We would recommend this company (and John as a guide) as a "must do" while in Hawaii. We felt that the almost $200 was worth every penny.

We took the Hawaii Forest and Trail tour the day after we had arrived in Hawaii. Mike was our guide, and he was fantastic. Since we were jet-lagged and two of us were older, Mike made the day perfect for us. He picked us up at the Hilton, Waikoloa Resort and drove us a ways until
we stopped and he had breakfast for us of fresh fruit, coffee, hot tea and a nice bread assortment. Then we went to the Volcano National Park. As he drove, he pointed out the cattle, the difference in the land, in the climate, etc. He was able to answer any questions that we had. Mike has a wonderful background and is very knowledgeable about the area. He took us on some shorter guided hikes (shorter because that is what we asked for) and pointed out the plants and told us the myths that went along with some of them. He took us through a volcano tube and pointed out the fumes/vapors of the volcano and sulfur. At lunch time, he took us to a spot overlooking the ocean where there were picnic tables. We had nice sandwiches (they made a salad for me, because I have problems with breads), a cookie, chips and a drink.
Off we went again, to see more of the island. We spent the entire day with Mike and he was a wonderful, thoughtful guide. He didn't rush us and he could make this day become what you would want it to be. If you wanted to hike more than us, that could be done. If there were children along, it could be suited to them. It was a perfect day that we won't forget, and I am writing this review because we won't forget Mike. He was wonderful.
