“Spacious with a view”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

We booked our stay at the Outrigger Royal Sea Cliff through Donna Bender who is an Outrigger Specialist. Our room was a spacious 2 bedroom with a large living area opening onto the lanai. The room was clean and neat, and included the essentials we needed for our stay (including a washer & dryer.) The staff was friendly and accommodating. The view from our lanai was great, as was the view from the open balcony at the end of the building, complete with couches & coffee table, where we watched the sunset & whales. Royal Sea Cliff is located close to town (about a 20 minute walk.) We plan to return for a longer stay soon.

Room Tip: Lanai with a view is great (you're in Hawaii!), so would recommend an upper floor. Very quiet f...

Donna Bender assisted with this reservation (as she did on Maui).

We checked in late - after 9:30pm - We had room 420 - this room SMELLS!!!! Someone - please clean this room top to bottom: wash the curtains, remove the cushion covers and wash them too! And please clean behind/under the furniture! Because it was late, and we were tired, we went to bed - but the first thing I did in the morning was request to be moved.

They accommodated us and moved us to room 602 (420 has a better view and 2 outside sitting areas). We could see the ocean, but not very well. The room was clean and nice, kitchen well equipped.

The grounds are beautiful. Staff was great.

The town is just a mile or two up the road and has all the food/stores anyone could ever want/need.

Stayed in many outriggers. Booked a two bedroom unit, when we arrived the AC was not on and the room smelled very "stale" and stuffy. One bedroom had two twin beds that were made so sloppy they looked like a child had been "jumping" on them. Room very dated.

The lady that checked us in smelled like smoke. Worst hotel experience we had.

What a pleasant surprise! we were in a studio condo that was right by one of the pools - it was such a spacious and comfortable unit we were pleasantly surprised. I have nothing but praise for the staff here - five minutes after walking in the door we received a courtesy call to ensure our satisfaction with our lodgings. Additionally they were more than happy to assist with any queries or information we may require. It is about a 20 minute walk into the heart of town or a $5 cab ride - it was recommended to catch a cab back at night as the street is not very well lit. All in all, very happy.

I thought I was booking an average hotel room and got much more. It had 2 separate bedrooms/bathrooms and a beautiful kitchen. The heart of the nightlife in Kona was only a few minutes away by car. The resort was clean and had fun, welcoming activities.

Room Tip: The resort itself is long and stretched out. So if you want to be close to the water make sure you...

We just finished a 3 week stay the the Outrigger Royal Sea Cliff, and overall had a great time at the property. PLEASE NOTE: These are individually owned condo's that are managed like a hotel. The furnishings are provided by the individual owners, NOT the nice folks at the Outrigger, so the quality can vary greatly from unit to unit.

The check-in was quick and efficient. There are two front desks... one for the Outrigger check-in, and the other for Wyndham time-share properties. We were directed to a nearby garden view unit, which is what we had booked. I read a comment about having to listen to a time share sales pitch, we weren't approached during our 3 week stay. At one point I asked some tourism questions of the folks manning the time-share desk. They provided the info I asked for, gave some other helpful pointers, and never mentioned the time-share to me.

Upon entering the unit, I noticed there was strange odor in the unit, and expressed concern. We went back to the front desk, and unfortunately found that there were only 2 units that were vacant... the odd smelling 1 bedroom unit and an efficiency. Unfortunately, since we were going to be staying for 3 weeks, we felt that the efficiency (while very nice, and odor free) just wouldn't cut it. We really needed the extra space. So, we accepted the odd smelling unit, with the stipulation, that if another less offensive unit should become available, we would be able to change units.

The front desk folks were REALLY trying to help us, but there just wasn't any other unit available to give us. They provided us with a floor fan to help circulate the air, and they started to hunt down an air ionizer/cleaner to help my allergies,

So, we started to unpack. As I opened the bedroom tv armoire, I found the source of the odor.... the armoire itself! We think the lacquer/varnish was deteriorating or something. So I went back to the front desk to report our findings. After a couple of minutes discussion (and brainstorming together), we decided that we could completely do without the stinky armoire, and within 15 minutes or so, it was removed from the unit. Unfortunately, since each unit is individually owned, it's the owner's responsibility to update/replace the furniture. Within 12 hours of the offensive armoire's removal, the odor was completely gone. In general, our unit needed updating. The living room sofa was coming apart, and we ended up using extra pillows from the bedroom to fill in the sofa gaps. The kitchen was meh.... 2 burners on the stove didn't work. Ice maker was sporadic. Dishwasher was touchy. But this is NOT the Outrigger's fault... it's the owner's fault. The washer and dryer worked well though. Bathroom was decent sized, but again needed updating.

We noticed that the pots/pans were inadequate. We planned on eating breakfasts in, and the skillets were not adequate to cook up more than 1 egg at a time. So we called the front desk. 20 minutes later, housekeeping came by with more pots/pans for us. The front desk called 30 minutes after to check up on our satisfaction. Any time we had an issue or request (remember, 3 week stay, something is bound to arise), the staff jumped on it and made sure we were happy and taken care of. Ask for more towels... they show up in 20-30 minutes. Need more coffee... 20-30 minutes later it shows up. Everything is on island time, so just kick back and be patient... they'll take care of you.

I really have to say that the Outrigger tried to cover everything you might need. Dishwasher detergent, coffee, laundry soap, beach/pool towels, beach chairs, sand mats.... even noodles and floats for the pool were all easily available. There's a lobby computer provided for the guests (w/printer). There's also a pool table and ping pong table available. You just go to the front desk for ping pong balls (I think they blow away due to the constant breezes).

Free wi-fi is available throughout the complex. I was able to pick up a signal on my tablet at both pools, and on my lanai. Parking is free (garaged), you're given a key-card when you check in, Many hotels charge for parking, so free is good.

There are two pools... the larger South pool, and the smaller North pool that has a jacuzzi spa. Both pools are ocean front. If you're visiting during the winter months keep an eye out towards the ocean. Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii to deliver their babies. We saw whale spouts, backs rolling as they dove, and even a couple of flipped whale tales, all while lounging at the pool. The free show saved us some money -- since we didn't have to go on a whale watching trip. In fact we got to see how the whale watch boats chased the whales -- I don't think I want to support that type of supposed eco-tourism. It was more like eco-harrassment to me.

On Monday evenings from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m., there's a welcome reception at the South (larger) pool. They provide puupuu's (snacks), flower leis, and have local performers do small concerts and hula demonstrations. The kids from a local hula dance school come with their teacher (who narrates) and dance. They were delightful. Who needs to pay $80+ per person for a luau... I got one for free at the hotel. Thursday evening is movie night at the South pool. Movie starts at 4:30'ish, and it's normally Hawaiian themed. Friday morning is flower lei making lessons... again at the South pool.

The buildings are a VERY bright white, as others have commented. However, they really are well maintained. The gardens in the inside courtyard and outer areas are all very lush and pretty. As I mentioned we had a garden view from our lanai, and it was very pretty and pleasant, but we still had a little glimpse of the ocen. Come on, you're on an island... you can ALWAYS see the ocean... you're surrounded. If you're freaked out by little gecko's possibly getting in your apartment, don't come to Hawaii -- they're everywhere. Occasionally, they would get in the condo, and we would chase them down, and then free them in the garden. We like geckos.

There were just nice little touches around the property, like couches/side chairs on one of the walkways so you could look at the ocean. A water cooler up in the lobby so you can stay hydrated. The groundskeepers were always tidying things.

So a note to the OWNER OF UNIT #507 -- UPDATE YOUR FURNITURE!! IT SMELLS LIKE CRAP AND SOME PIECES ARE FALLING APART. STOP BUYING CHEAP PIECES.... better quality will last longer.

Outrigger Royal Sea Cliff is good value for money. Room was a bit dated with furniture, but kitchen was appeared to be a recent upgrade.
Resorts amenities are solid. Especially liked no-cost activities they sponsored for all guests including lei making and entertainment, first day orientation breakfast, and two nights of Hawaiian cultural experience.
Resort not too far to downtown Kona, major fast food stops, Target/Walmart/K-Mart, and central to highways, harbor and popular beaches.
Would definitely consider staying here again.
