“Great Fun for our First Luau”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

This was the first luau my friend & I visited. I don't know if I'll ever go to another, but it's something you need to do at least once when you visit Hawaii.

We were very pleased with the experience. The seating was well organized, ensuring that each party could be seated together. The emcees were good, especially a truly hilarious deadpan Samoan guy, who drew out a lot of laughs. They were great at engaging the audience. Dances were quite good, and drew on a variety of Polynesian cultures. I have no idea how "authentic" they were, but for a tourist show it was energetic and fun. They were clearly quite skilled at their craft. The music was great too--a mix of pop tunes and more traditional Hawaiian music. The emcee also spent some serious time explaining the deeper spiritual and social meaning of luaus, hula and the concepts of ohana and aloha.

The food was great--nice variety for all tastes. I personally loved the imu-cooked pork (much like pulled pork, sans barbecue sauce). Traditional Hawaiian faves like poi and lomi-lomi salmon were included, but if you hated the poi (I did) there were many more "mainstream" options like mixed salad, whitefish, chicken, sweet potatoes (they're purple, but taste just like the orange ones), fresh fruit & nuts, banana bread, & delicious desserts. The mojitos were kind of watered down, but I didn't go there for the drinks.

There are bathrooms nearby, an often underestimated convenience. The luau is right by the water and you can watch the sun set over the bay. The organized seating makes it easy to meet your fellow travelers, and the emcee promoted a nice feeling of camaraderie.

I don't know if I'd do a luau again, but it's something you should try at least once, and this was an enjoyable experience. It was comparably priced to other luaus, though we got it a little cheaper by booking it with Atlantis Submarine Cruises as a package deal.

Well recommended, and a lot of fun. Definitely give it a try.

“Just an okay experience.”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

After we validated our parking voucher ($5), we walked to the oceanfront site where the Luau was being held. We were welcomed with shell lei greetings. Flower lei could be purchased if desired. We lined up for mai tai drink after the hostess showed us to our seating.

There was a Hawaiian craft presentation, hula demonstration, Imu presentation, and a brief history show prior to the feast.

The food was just alright. It wasn't very impressive and a little bit overpriced. Finally, I got to try the poi and lomi-lomi salmon. We loved the haupia and kona broil the most! The rest of the food was average.

The luau team serenaded us with a couple of Hawaiian songs. The MC was a very good performer and singer. The hula performances was great. We enjoyed the various cultural dances from other Polynesian islands. The night was capped with the Samoan fire dancers.

While we recommended this show for those who want to try luau, we are not planning to visit another luau in the future visit.

Ahuna He'iau was strategically situated in the hotel. The hotel has a great art gallery of King Kamehameha and Hawaiian's history, which we had a pleasure viewing after the luau.

Wow, we booked this luau because it was close to the hotel, yes, right behind the hotel. My husband is a chef and enjoyed watching the staff prep the pit and put the pig in. Yes he watched it come out at the Luau and ate some much. Great food, amazing favors. The hula dancing to the show. Excellent

“Great food selection and wonderful show”
Reviewed September 9, 2012

My husband and two girls (age 7,8) truly enjoyed this. It wasn't just the food and the show, but the events beforehand that truly made the experience. My youngest learn how to hula, they got tattoos, learned how to open a coconut and truly enjoyed the variety of dances performed by the team. I loved it that the location was right at our hotel and the food was pretty good as well. It is pretty pricey, but worth it, in my opinion.

“First time Luau experience”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

We purchased the priority seating upgrade as this was our first experience and wanted to enjoy it. We had great seats right at the front of the stage so the kids could see everything. I would not say that the food was traditional Hawaiian fare with the exception of the pig. The food was good, not great but was edible. The music that accompanied the show by the live band was great and we even purchased a CD of the band and music. The stage show was fun and lively, the highlight for the kids was the fire dance and the kids were so happy when they got a high 5 from the fire dancer. Overall this was a great first time experience, cannot compare it against any others but we enjoyed it overall and glad we did it.
