We did a 90 minute aerial view of the island. Our pilot flew over all of of the Big Island, including parts, particularly the North east portion - which are very challenging to access on land. The scenery was amazing - so lush, with many waterfalls. We also went over the Volcano region, and saw an active flow as well as the lava bowl that the Park Visitor Center overlooks. Again, flat out spectacular. In air, you get a perspective on how different each part of the island is in terms of vegetation and topology.

Our pilot was great - well informed, fun and clearly focused on safety. Everyone has a window seat. We shied away from the helicopter tours as we wanted something that at least "felt" safer (don't really know if it is), and we did feel comfortable. Parts of the ride do get bumpy as there is turbulence around the volcano due to the warm air rising from the lava. My 10 year felt a little out of sorts for a few hours after the trip, so be prepared if anyone is prone to air sickness. It's also rather expensive. That all being said, it's worth it. We did get fortunate on weather - it was pretty clear even on the traditional rainy side of the island. I imagine a cloudy day would have changed things a lot - likely wouldn't have been able to fly low enough to see lava for example. Highly recommend but recognize the weather risk

Visitors to the Big Island invariably want to see the magnificence of the Volcano....with Maura Kea and Madam Pele giving astounding views of the molten lava and the ever growing Island , as the magma flows to the sea. It is nature at its rawest and most fascinating.
Viewing the sights of the Island from the air is a real treat and it doesn't get much better than the sunset flight with Big Island Air. Most might choose a helicopter, but the flight with Big Island Air is much more wallet friendly and you see exactly the same sights...the lush countryside, the valleys and waterfalls, the beautiful and sometimes inaccessible coastline, the magic of the volcano and a beautiful sunset on the return home.
Your captain will give you a complete commentary and all sorts of amusing stories...you will thoroughly enjoy.
I warmly recommend the Big Island Air tour as part of your itinerary when visiting this enchanting place.
Mahalo to all at the company.

This tour was fantastic. Essential for seeing everything before you try to drive to any of these places see how far and difficult they really are by air first! Only 9 seats so book early!! Each seat has a window view, the seats are wide, comfortable leather. There are headsets for everyone through which the pilot tells you exactly what you are seeing and keeps air traffic control on in the background.
One of my boys is travel sick and he did not take his pills: be warned, if you get even the slightest bit air sick take something! You fly at about 1500ft, below the clouds but it is bumpy - you fly through two wind lines and the heat of August creates additional air pockets.
We saw real lava flow into the ocean and on the surface, hidden valleys, waterfalls, black sand beaches, the full island basically. The pilot was superb, really good.
Well worth every dollar!

There are not enough superlatives to describe our nearly 2 hour flight around the island with Big Island Air!!! 3,000' waterfalls, flying over the active caldera, and seeing the lava fall into the ocean... just amazing!!!!!!!! Rex was a great pilot and very knowledgeable. We did the helicopter tour last year, and while that trip was awesome, this beat it hands down!

Granted it's pricey- but this IS TOTALLY worth the price!!! If you are interested in making a lifetime memory for your family- DO IT! Our family of 5 went & even though it was a little cloudy that day we had breath taking views! Our pilot was fabulous and the plane is very comfortable.

To give you a better idea of just how impressed we were...know the writer of this review has a serious fear of flying! No kidding.

Might recommend a morning flight - you might have less clouds for the volcano viewing. But attaching what we saw in cloudy day - still totally awesome!!
