My husband wanted some fresh fish on our one-week vacation to the Kailua Kona area, and we stumbled upon Bite Me online. First of all, the restaurant is somewhat hard to find, but after studying the map presented on the restaurant's website, we were able to find it.
We arrived and were seated at a picnic table on an open-air deck area. There is very minimal view due to fencing that surrounds the deck. My husband ordered the Catch of the Day, grilled, with cole slaw and spanish rice. I ordered a French dip sandwich with french fries. We also ordered the smoked fish dip appetizer. The smoked fish dip was good, but was served cold in a plastic container with basic Ritz crackers. Tasty, but didn't seem worth the $9 price tag. My husband's fish was AMAZING, and he walked away saying that it was easily the best fish he had ever had. My sandwich was OK, but not amazing.
My biggest complaint was that we were plagued by flies throughout our entire meal. I know that the restaurant can't help the flies, but it frankly made out meal quite miserable. We've eaten at several other open-air restaurants throughout our stay in the area, and were never pestered by flies to the extent that we were at Bite Me. Perhaps the proximity to the marina makes the flies more plenty - not sure.
Our service was OK - not fabulous, but not bad either. We paid $50-$60 for our dinner, and we didn't feel it was worth it due to the amount of time we spent swatting flies.
In summary, the fresh fish is amazing, but the flies are annoying.
