I booked this place for a week after reading the good reviews on tripadvisor but it wasn't the right place for us. After the first night it was very clear that we were in the wrong place according to our needs but due to the fact we paid in advance we didn't check out and we stayed for the rest of the week. Our studio was extremly small and we even had difficulties in finding the space for our siutcases. There are no glass windows so the room is very noisy and if there are other guests in the room behind you, you surely depend for sleeping in their good sense of being polite and not to wake you up very soon in the morning or late in the evening( what happened to us). A lot of light filters and even in the very early morning we hadn't enough dark for sleeping. In the room there isn't a kitchenette so if you want to cook something you need to go in the garden and use the burner of the barbeque. The door and the nets aren't very sealed so bugs can go in and some of them are quite big and disgusting. We certainly needed something different and we didn't enjoied completely our stay in Big Island.

We loved low-key, relaxing atmosphere of the Kona Hula Girl, and Dean and Sherrie were wonderful, generous hosts. The property was beautiful, and our room, the Tiki Suite, was adorable and well-appointed. Dean and Sherrie offer everything for a beach stay -- beach towels, boogie boards, ice chests, bamboo mats, beach chairs -- they even had aloe vera and suntan lotion if you were in desparate need of it. They even allowed us to pick some fresh papayas off of their tree. The windows are simply screened and shuttered, and that took some getting used to, but it only took us one night to adjust. You can't complain about the price, either -- simply one of the best values in Kona.

My husband and I stayed in the Tiki Room for one night in July 2011. Although listed rates are $85/night (which is a great price for this mini-suite with kitchenette/dining area and distant seaviews) we paid $100 since we we didn't meet a multiple-night minimum. Unfortunately, we were only able to stay here for one night...after arriving at Kona Airport at 8PM...and didn't get to experience more of the place.

I'm not quite sure how to classify the place. It's not really a hotel as there is no signage and by all appearances, it's a house. I wouldn't call it a bed and breakfast either because, well, there is no breakfast. I guess you could call it a house with a few lodgings spaces incorporated into it.

It was night time when we checked in so we couldn't see the ocean until morning. But the photos on the website are completely accurate. I never met the Kona Hula Girl herself, but did meet the Kona Hula Husband. He was efficient in checking us in, but conversation didn't go much beyond that (probably because we were exhausted after 15 hours of flying and we didn't even get to the house until about 9PM and I'm sure he was tired, too.

We liked the place - and would have stayed longer had our itinerary permitted. But as cute as downtown Kona was, we really wanted to see other areas of the island more (South Point, Volcanoes National Park, Waipi'o Rim) and to do that required us to stay in difference locations on the island (it is the biggest in the Hawaiian island chain, after all).

One caveat for those who may be loud (or who are sensitive to loud neighbors), the property has no windows. They have openings to the outside with screens all over the place (it's quite bright, airy, and lovely during the day) but there is no glass. You can't shut windows to provide privacy...there are only screens and louvered shudders (to block light). Essentially, the room is like a spacious screened in porch.

We never heard any neighbors ourselves (anything more than normal conversation tones, that is), but we felt the need to be extra cautious not to make too much noise as we settled in at night or watched a bit of TV.

Otherwise, this would be a good home base if you're planning to explore the west coast of the Big Island for a few days.

A short (just minutes) car ride away is downtown Kona with restaurants, shops, and the ocean. Kona was fine for a few hours, but the town itself doesn't warrant exploration for multiple days when the rest of the island has so much to offer.

Room Tip: The Tiki room is upstairs, in the back, with no neighbor above you or beside you.

Dean & Sherri were great. We stayed in the Tiki room, which was bright and cheerful, with a vaulted ceiling. It had an ocean view in the distance, and we could hear tropical birds chirping in the morning. They have a nice deck area with a large, new grill, strung lights, and torches, which provide a lovely ambiance if you choose to make dinner. The hosts have everything you could possibly need, from cooking utensils and dinnerware to beach umbrellas. They are happy to talk and also happy to give you some space if need be; the perfect situation. The internet worked well. We also walked down to Lava Java for dinner near the water; we had the fish special, which was a bit pricey, but worth every penny. Delicious! We also had breakfast there, which was very tasty; the portions were large, and they give you a giant mug of excellent coffee. Overall, we were very pleased with our stay. The only drawback is that the B & B doesn't serve breakfast; at least they never mentioned anything about it to us.

If you want to get rid of resorts and stay away of crowds, this is an excellent place for doing so! It's very easy to get to it, for it's strategically placed near enough of both Alii Dr. (Kailua-Kona's coastal drive) and Queen K' Highway (which you want to take to get anywhere near Kailua-Kona).
They have everything you need: from microwave, fridge, sink, to Hawai'i guides, books for beach-reading, beach chairs, sunshade, after-sun lotion, wash machine, even a BBQ area!
Although Hualalai Rd. it's a busy one, it's quiet during nightime, so you get a good sleep.
Enjoy!

While visiting friends on Big Island we took the opportunity to travel around the island. We stayed a few nights at this great little place. Very clean and comfortable, a nice little garden and a wonderful view over the sea from our room. A short and easy walk from the town where there are lots of nice restaurants to choose from. Last but not least - fantastic hosts who really does everything to make their guests feel comfortable.

We stayed at the Kona Hula Girl for the first leg of our Big Island vacation and were very pleased! The room was sparkling clean, the hosts were wonderful and the location was great. It was nice to wake up and see the ocean every morning! There were plenty of ammenities: beach towels, travel guides, ice chests, boogie boards and beach umbrellas. if you are looking for a nice place to stay for a great price, I would definitely recommend the Kona Hula Girl!! I can't wait to go back!!
