if you are not in a hurry well worth the drive thru coffee country. Slow going because of the curves but that's good, it gives you a chance to get the feel of old Hawaii

I love driving on Mamalahoa Highway any chance I get... during the day. This is the upper road from Kona to Waimea on the Island of Hawaii. The views are great. The temperature is about 15 degrees cooler than the low road, Queen Kaahumanu. It is also the Hawaii Belt Road which runs all the way around the island. The drive is approximately all day long. Plan on 8-12 hours depending on how many stops you choose to make. Even though Hawaii is only the 76th largest island on the planet it is more than twice the size of all the other Hawaiian islands put together. Do the drive. You will love it.

It is not the road but the weather conditions. First experience was driving from Kona to Waimea. It was a clear day, great views both up the slope towards the volcano as well as seen the lava track to the ocean. ideal experience.
The next trip a few days later was from Waimea to Kona. The conditions were horrendous. Thick fog (they call it vog as it is a mixture of volcano plume sulpher, mosture and air) was mixed with torrential rain. The rain is like what you see in a car wash. Visibilty was about 50 - 60 feet. Drivers slowed; most had their headlights on. It was not an easy drive but people were smart and slowed given the conditions. So beware.

Enjoy all of Hawaii's micro-climates on a day long excursion around the island. Rent a car, don't take a tour bus. Meet the locals at the little food shacks around the island. They love to answer your quesations, and take pride in their towns.

Highways are in great condition all over Hawaii. Watch for goats and donkeys, but all around, great highway and very scenic.
